Straddler-on-Straddler advice 12 years, 5 months ago
Created this group because not all of us have lesbian friends we can go to for advice. If a few more people join I’ll consider changing it to a private group (only people who are members can read and comment). Feel free to reply and post your opinion.
Or also get the ball rolling. Can be a problem on anything girls, coming out, alternate…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoHas anyone read the Room by Emma Donogue. I just started reading it after it having great reviews but it seems a little slow and sad, not sure whether to continue. Any recommendations here?
-
I haven’t read it, but several people on a message board I go to called Snarkfest read it and were raving over it. These particular people have pretty good taste I think, so I wanted to give it a go. Apparently, a few of them felt it lagged a bit in the beginning as well, so maybe it picks up?
-
Please continue. It’s such a good read. A bit depressing at some parts yet uplifting at the same time. You won’t regret reading it :)
-
Strongly agree with @Zulu, with the caveat that we can’t know what may be particularly unsettling/press buttons for you… so stop if you are feeling that you need to stop… but I genuinely LOVED this book. Donoghue works her way pretty thoroughly through the possibilities of the situation, so there’s some intensity, but she does it with real…[Read more]

I’m half way through at the moment on your advice, I think I will have to keep reading. I just find myself so haunted by it that I have trouble sleeping (though to be honest I read it just before bed). However I wake up in the morning grateful I’m not in that situation.

Femme Straddlers 12 years, 5 months agoI made this group coz I often feel like the only femme in the village when I go out. So I love to be reassured that I’m not the only girly girl out there and not the only one who faces: “you’re too pretty to be gay” “or no you’re not.” when I tell someone I like ladies.
-
I KNOW RIGHT, I can like to coordinate my eyeliner to my sundress and still like teh ladies! And the too pretty argument, UGH UGH UGH. You’re too ugly to be straight.
-
One of the best compliments I ever got was from a butch who noticed that I coordinated my eyeliner to my nail polish and the accent color in my scarf. Fear now, folk who appreciate this are out there!
-
-
“you’re too pretty to be gay” is the WORST. Gaydom is what ugly women do (beause they can’t find a man)? Um, no.
-
augh, this drives me mad every time someone tells me this. my best friend’s parents actually think it’s just a phase specifically because i’m “too pretty” to like women. what kind of logic is that? fffff get out and shut the door when you leave.
-
I’ve had gay men say it to me, I didn’t even know what to say…
-
-
hey, im in the same boat, the “too pretty” thing is a popular come back if i tell someone im gay but theres also the “aw, such a waste” – i wana say , wtf?? to most of those ppl but i hate confrontation and just sorta roll with the punches. i needa get a back bone installed! lol
-
Oh my god, my old boss (who is female!!!!) once told me it was ‘such a waste’ that Portia de Rossi is gay. I just kind of gaped at her, but I wish I’d asked her what the hell she meant, because I never understand that crap.
-
but in all honesty, I think we’ve all secretly thought the same about a straight girl :P
-
-
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who worries about the way I dress affecting whether or not people believe that I’m not attracted to men. I mean, I hope I’m never self-centered enough to think I’m the “only one who…” anything, but still, nice to see confirmation.
-
that’s coz femmes are hidden in masses of straight girls, tis why I had to create the group.

Any raw or raw-inclined vegans out there? Question: how do you survive the winter??
-
I’ve read a tiny bit about raw veganism– someone please talk about it for me? I’m very interested.
-
basically the idea behind is that you get more nutrition out of having your fruit and veggies raw (and ideally organic). But not eating processed food e.g. canned anything, not even bread, etc. you also avoid putting toxins in your body.
The rules are no heating up food above 30 degrees. So you can’t boil dried lentils or anything like that. But…[Read more]
