Genderstraddlers 12 years, 1 month agoOkay, so is it wrong of me to suggest that sex and gender can be unrelated concepts? In that a person’s physical sex doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with their gender presentation?
Because I totes wrote that in my last MA essay and the ‘expert’ on gender theory (she is a professor of women’s writing) at my university disagreed. Apparently…[Read more]-
You’re totally right, in my opinion. I get where people tend to think that they’re related, but that’s because they take what has become a societal norm and assume it’s genetic, like a person’s genitalia. What people don’t realize is that if they went to a different society, they’d find things to be completely different.
-
I agree with you, though I’m not clear if you’re talking about the distinction between sex and gender identity (how you think of yourself/how you define your gender) or between sex and gender expression (how you dress/present yourself publicly). You’re still right in either case, though, neither condition is automatically tied to sex. If the…[Read more]

Well now I’m just wishing I’d argued. But I think I was actually too surprised she thought that to say anything. Sometimes I forget that the rest of the world doesn’t think the way I – and most of AS – do. I get so into this feminist/queer activist internet world that I actually do get surprised when someone has a different opinion. I just thought…[Read more]

It’s okay, I wasn’t trying to diss you for any lack of clarity, I just wanted to make sure I was giving you an answer actually related to what you’d asked.
And I know what you mean about getting used to being around understanding people – sometimes I use a word like “cisgender” in conversation and am honestly puzzled by the blank looks I get in…[Read more]-
Yeah I knew you weren’t being snarky or anything.
It really frustrates me that these issues/terminology aren’t widely known or accepted. I mean, my friends, who are otherwise intelligent and liberal people, have no idea what I’m talking about when I bring up heterosexism or benevolent sexism etc. And it also frustrates me that ‘heterosexism’ gets…[Read more]-
There’s a really excellent explanation of this stuff here: http://tranarchism.com/2010/11/26/not-your-moms-trans-101/ I certainly use it for various arguments I get into!

pdx autostraddlers 12 years, 1 month agoMy God do we suck. What is everybody doing this weekend? Also, for photo opportunity purposes we should meet at Blow Pony this month and get a photo of us on the balcony. That way everyone knows its P town.

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 2 months agoHello lovely straddlers :) I hope you’re all doing well.
So….hair. Do you have feelings about it? It seems like such a very gendered thing. Personally I have really long hair. As in down to my ass kind of hair. I’ve more or less always had it like this and I like this way. Sometimes though it just seems to fall down my back like a big shiny…[Read more]-
I know what you mean about hair being such a strong influence in how people gender you – personally, my upbringing has given me a skewed outlook on the gender of hair. The two constantly long-haired people I saw growing up were my dad and my closest-in-age guy cousin, and my very female best friend got a buzz cut as soon as she broke free of her…[Read more]

I tend not to categorize other people based on their hair (I agree with Cricket, it’s more of a cultural thing) but from personal experience it’s a huge indicator for most societies. I’ve had short hair since 2006. Mostly when I’m in contact with any customer service – shops, airport security, hotel check-in, takeout counters – everyone calls me…[Read more]

pdx autostraddlers 12 years, 2 months agoCaitlin, the site is being weird again and not letting me reply to your last update. I think we totally should do a meetup, I recommend sooner than later though, as I may be moving in September. I’m not sure yet! Do we have any underage folks in this group? Do you guys want to go to Gaycation this month?
-
Let us say Gaycation for now. When is that? this weekend or next? IDK. Where are you moving?
-
It’s usually the 3rd Saturday, so this month it would be the 16th. I’m probably moving to Eugene, still figuring it all out. Blahhh.
-
-
so I will probably be at gaycation. I will either be in a pink collard shirt cuz I will be coming from a wedding or my legalize gay T shirt. You can’t really miss me as I am blond, at almost six feet.
-
:( I was sick this weekend, and didn’t end up going out. Sorry I didn’t mention it on here sooner!
-
-
that is OK because I was busy getting fucked by the scappoose police. If I had not been giving someone a ride home, they would have towed my car. Me and Scappoose are now in a bitter divorce. So they took my license as well and I would have been stranded in effing Scappoose. Made a friend though.
-
Ugh, way shitty!

pdx autostraddlers 12 years, 2 months agoIDEA: what if we all get an AS t shirt and meet at a bar/coffee shop depending on how many minors we have and have a party. If we all got the T shirt we would be a) really cool and b) easily identifiable, and c) helping out AS. Since we are all super motivated to meet up we could make the meet date far far away like August or September. Thoughts?

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 3 months agoSo my area had our Pride festival yesterday, which started at 6:45 am and did not end until 4:00 am this morning. It was pretty awesome, but I had one problem. I had a LOT of gay guys hit on me!! [I’m a girl, and didn’t think I was THAT androgynous looking until last night] My feelings are mixed, somewhere in between being flattered and really…[Read more]

I had a 40 year old gay man hit on me at a gay bar recently. At first I was a bit flattered, then he became super creepy and kept sending his friends over to talk to me. Apparently my voice did not give me away and he became more of a creeper until my friend posed as my boyfriend.
-
Oh I’m glad it’s not just me. LOL on having your friend pose…was said friend a girl or a guy [or other]?
Because two girls pretending to be gay boyfriends tickles me for some reason :P I think I just get a kick out of gender bending.-
Well, he’s a transman and I guess I was being perceived as male, so we were seen as a gay couple? Who knows though, gender is confusing!
-
Gender IS confusing! I find I do best when I don’t try to label myself too specifically or think about it too much…which I should/am trying to do at the moment lol.

Haha, I’ve run into this a couple times too. Wandering around the gay village in Toronto when I had just recently moved into the area, I found myself being checked out by gay men when I walked by. It was a little unsettling haha. But I think that was arguably more tolerable than this weekend when I got hit on by a high school freshman girl……[Read more]
