This group is so quiet. Controversial discussion topic! Fake meats: yay or nay?
Personally, I say nay. I stopped eating meat because the thought of it grosses me out, so why would I eat something that allows the consumer to pretend they are eating meat? I once ate a Quorn chik’n patty that resembled chicken so much I stopped eating after a few…[Read more]

pdx autostraddlers 12 years, 4 months agoI really think we should all (well, at least everyone who can drink) go to the Crave dance party at Crush on June 17, because I love it, and it would be fun! I only got to go to the Pride party there last year for about half an hour cause I was super sick, and I didn’t want to get anyone else sick, so I still feel like I missed out. If you haven’t…[Read more]

By ‘can drink’ I mean ‘of legal drinking age’. Obviously you don’t HAVE to drink!
-
Also, exclamation points!!!!
-
why not?

OK I want to go the crush party, but I have to go to the Gay Men’s Choir benefit thing for AIDS. So, I was think good ol Gaycation. That is the big one on Saturday, i think. Also how are we going to spot each other in the crowd?
-
Gaycation is on Friday as well. Luckily, Crave and Gaycation are super easy walking distance from one another.
-
well, shit. that was my big plan for having to spend FOREVER listening to gay men sing. Seriously this thing goes from 7 30 to 10. what is on for saturday?
-
It’s so weird that Gaycation is on Saturday this year! I also find it kinda frustrating, since lots of gay girls love Gaycation, which puts it in competition with Crave, which is one of the few good queer ladies nights in Portland. >:( I like both, but I don’t want anything interfering with Crave, since it’s something specifically for US,…[Read more]

Yeah, I hear ya but there’s so many events and because they are so close you can totally party hop. Gaycation is always Saturday normally but during Pride always Friday. It’s cuz NO ONE wants to compete with Blow Pony, and some of the DJs are playing it too I think.
(But yeah, Friday is crazy and I’m having a hard time figuring out my Friday…[Read more]

what is up in Nopo? I am trying to figure this all out too.

Tran family Picnic, Q Center’s Hip 2 B Q, and a house party that Eric Sellers has every year

I guess that makes sense, about Blow Pony. Also I was drunk and a little cranky when I posted that semi-rant before.

Are any of you going to Crave or Gaycation tonight? I don’t know what any of you look like!!
-
I’m going to Crave, and I’m wearing a short-sleeved white dress with rainbow knee socks. Introduce yourself if you dare! Please don’t sneak up on me, I startle easily.

Would anybody care to join me in a discussion regarding the goddess also known as Isa Chandra Moskowitz?
-
What are some good starter recipes from her repetoire?
-
starter meaning you’re less of an experienced chef, or starter as in ‘the best things ever that you must try first’?
-
Both! I can follow a recipe with tasty results as long as it’s not overly complicated.

Veganomicon is such a great book. Isa is friends with lots of my friends but I don’t think she likes me…but she has good recipes.
-
I have her vegan cookies cookbook and made the black and white cookies with some friends months ago, people still rave about them. Best ever.
-
I don’t have that book yet…. which makes me really sad. I love the chewy chocolate raspberry cookies… I think they’re in Veganomicon, but maybe it’s Vegan with a Vengeance… They’re the quickest to just whip up when you’ve got a cookie craving.

I love her vegan cookbook! She has the BEST recipe for vegan pancakes, my gluttenous little heart was so happy when I found it.

Yeah I read about meat glue and how they use it to make fake cuts like filet mingon
uh HUh so I am moving more and more to just fresh veggies and salads love my ROMAINE lettuce so crunchy!!!
I’m all for it. I mean, there are researchers out there working on growing meat in petri dishes, and I think that’s awesome. People eat meat because they think it tastes good. If it’s possible to make cruelty-free meat (or fake meat) that still tastes good, I’m not sure what the problem is. It would just encourage more people to eat less of the real deal.
I think it can be a good aid for the transitional period right after someone becomes a vegetarian. My transition to vegetarianism was extremely sudden. I saw some cows get shot for food and never touched meat again. I had all these cravings and eating fake meat (veggie burgers and a lot of the Morningstar Farm products) got rid of those…[Read more]
I think it’s good for sudden “food urges,” like fake Italian sausage to go with my sauteed onions and peppers, or fake bologna to put in my epic sandwiches. I don’t miss the taste of meat, but I do miss certain foods that I enjoyed when I used to eat meat. But I’m suspicious of the looong list of ingredients in fake meat, and so in general they…[Read more]
Oh nooo, fake veggie buffalo wings are the SHIT. that and the tofurky italian sausage which made a pleasant addition to my spicy jambalaya that i made for my little evening shindig. So, I’m suspicious most of the time, like I just tried “fake” bacon strips and they taste like cardboard. But, as a black woman, I grew up eating “soul food” which…[Read more]
I almost always regret eating fake meat on the rare occasions that I do. I just think they’re so heavy and heavily processed, tofu all the way!!
…I avoided fake meats at all costs the first five or six years I was a veg. Somewhere along the line (I think it was when I first discovered tempeh and seitan, or when I went vegan?) I got over the ick-factor, and now make seitan from scratch about once a month, to the extreme delight of many of my friends. I’m also hopelessly in love with the…[Read more]
I think I agree that fake meat is a good transitional tool. I was making fake chicken finger subs and tacos when I went veg. A big part of why I stopped is I don’t think loading up on soy every day is a great idea. Maybe my disfavor toward fake meats is misplaced. I mostly just thought that Q’uorn chik’n patty tasted and had a texture far too much…[Read more]
I wasn’t really into fake meats in the beginning for a similar reason – it tasted like meat and weirded my head out too much. But 17 years later, I’ve forgotten what meat tastes like and can enjoy a Red Bamboo nugget (or five. YUM) and homemade seitan in a stir-fry. I would LOVE to figure out how to make delicious “chicken” nuggets though. Anyone…[Read more]
yes! it is quite labor intensive but totally worth it. my gf makes it for me as a special treat when i have a horrible week. i prefer to toss them in wing sauce. i miss boneless buffalo wings on the regular. they key is freezing the tofu. keep it in the package, dont open it, and put it in the freezer over the night. then put in fridge and thaw.…[Read more]
