The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 6 months agoNon-fiction recommendations: Eating Animals by Johnathon Safran Foer
I’m nearly done with it, but it’s already changed my perspective on a lot of shit I either chose to ignore/thought I knew, even though I’m vegetarian.
And, The Purity Myth: How America’s Obsession with Virginity is Hurting Young Women by Jessica Valenti.
Everyone loves a good…[Read more]-
Ooh, I’ve got ‘The Purity Myth’ on my Paperback Swap wish list, so it’s good to see confirmation that it’s as good as it looks. Is she one of the same writers from ‘Yes Means Yes’?

Oh yeah, Jessica Valenti wrote/helped write both of those.
They’re both really good, super accessible and not theory heavy.
If you ARE looking for more theory-heavy stuff, I’ve got a great list !-
Thanks, but I’ll skip the heavy theory! I have a master’s degree in Women’s Studies and heavy theory gives me PTSD flashbacks to grad school. Maybe in another decade or so I’ll be able to read it again!
But I do still like the more accessible work on the subject, so I’ve got Jessica Valenti on my list :)

Eating Animals ruined my life. I keep looking at my dog and wondering why I feel so bad about feeling the need to maybe someday eat him. And I think he knows. He keeps his distance now.
-
I know right? So uncomfortable. But I’m sure we’d feel the same way if we knew the chicken or cow that was going to be killed to eat. That detachment is what scared me the most, I think.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 6 months agoHaven’t been reading too much lately, but I do have “The Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P.Lovecraft” and ” Dark Tower: The Long Road Home” graphic novel sitting next to my bed. I need to get back into the swing of Lovecraft and King, it’s been so long since I did any serious reading.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 6 months agoRay Bradbury’s Zen and the Art of Writing is on the top of the massive pile. When I say massive, I mean like 30+ books. It’s a big nightstand. And a perilous pile.
