The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just finished reading “The History of White People” by Nell Irvin Painter (I think I saw it recommended on here) and it was really interesting. I’m working on “Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme” now and really enjoying it so far.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI love Nalo Hopkinson! She’s a scifi writer whose stories are based in Caribbean culture, which is an element I really haven’t seen incorporated into scifi before. I read her first book ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ and was really excited about it. So I went out and found another of her books, ‘Midnight Robber,’ and I just started it today. So…[Read more]

I think I need to read these all. (Assuming I can even find them here in the Antipodes :P)

If you can find them, you should definitely give them a try! Now that I’m thinking about it, I vaguely recall reading and liking another one of her books several years ago. It was called something like “The Salt Roads” or maybe just “Salt Roads” and it had time travel. So she’s got something for any scifi preference!

ALSO I have a question! Those of you who have library degrees – what sort of work did you have to do within them?-
I saved the link to watch later–I’ve been interested in how other countries approach libraries as an entity. (The Australian model and US model appear similar.)
As a grad student, I’ve taken classes on Into to Libraries (history, overview of information exchange theory, usually bits about sociology, business management, and a little bit of…[Read more]

omg you can have an lgbtq focus in library school? every time i start dreaming about being a librarian i envision having some kind of focus on lit of/for under-represented groups.

http://bit.ly/jlIWOZi’m so pissed off that i can’t be objective right now. please forgive me. a society spends money on what it agrees is important…so, sponsoring NASCAR is more important that school f*cking libraries?!! *i need a minute*

Kids who don’t enjoy reading or think critically will grow up into the kind of adults who do not think critically when exposed to political rhetoric or fact-check stuff important people say. One of the professors at my iSchool did research that showed student performance was better in schools with degreed librarians than in those without one ……[Read more]

ReachoutReads is a website for teens that recommends YA lit for life’s tough situations, and hosts author chats so readers can discuss the books and meet other folk going through what they’re going through. I don’t see anything queer yet, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t there by the end of the month…
