VIDEO: Ari Fitz Wants to Help You Get Dressed Like a Tomboy for Prom

Carmen’s Team Pick:

Ari Fitz — reality television star, future first-time A-Camper, and probably your own personal fashion icon — has spent a good chunk of the last two years documenting fashion that blurs the lines of gender expectations with her ongoing webseries TOMBOYISH. Those videos help make tomboy fashion, style, and life accessible to the big, bad world, and have helped many of us get dressed more than once.

But what you wear out into the world is one thing, and what you wear into your prom hall is a very different one.

And thus, PROMBOYISH is here. Ari is saving the day with a two-part miniseries to affirm and inspire the prom-going amongst us to live their best lives and find something for prom that actually fits (both literally and also in your heart space).

In part one, Ari gets gussied up and picks out the outfit she’d wear to prom if her prom were to happen now, and not then. She also has a very cute prom date and braids their hair. Ari’s re-envisioning of prom looks a lot better than my proms, of which there were three, thank you for asking.

In part two, which exploded onto the internet this morning, Ari asks four tomboys to take on the same task. What would they wear to prom if they were going to prom right here right now? The answer is, once again, something much better than the stuff Carmen wore to prom three separate times.

Good luck out there, kids. May prom season dress you well.

  1. I skipped my prom cause I was just not done yet, as a person, and if this had been around I may have gone anyway.

  2. Come through this is truly lovely. Ari and her project are so important and necessary. ????

  3. I love this!
My school didn’t have prom, but I AM hopefully graduating this summer (which isn’t really similar, but both do involve formal dress, at least?) and have been trying to find a way I can wear a suit without feeling like a small boy who stole their Dad’s.
