After becoming the first woman in World Cup history to score a brace in back-to-back games, Megan Rapinoe’s USWNT has advanced to the semifinals and has a date with the Lionesses on the horizon. Rapinoe’s success — she’s a leader in the race for the Golden Boot — means that we’ve got a littany of great of stories about her for today’s edition of cupdates!
But first, here’s Steve Kerr being very right about something:

That piece about the class politics in Taylor Swift’s video is interesting and raises good points. I wish they would have named lookism explicitly, in addition to classism. Hardly any people ever talk about lookism which is an important system of oppression to be dismantling, too.
Tbh I would love to see AS content on the topic of lookism in queer communities and how so much of survival and ability to thrive in this society is based on desirability politics.
Am I the only one reading Taylor Swift’s sudden focus on the queer community as a precursor to her coming out? She’s been very quiet on queer politics in the past, which given the industry she’s in and the benefits pop stars gain from embracing gays, has always seemed odd. Not just odd, the classic behaviour of someone who’s queer but terrified of people finding out.
Argh I still like the Taylor Swift video. Full of clichés on all sides. Tongue firmly in cheek. Having been raised by Bugs Bunny (in spite of the nuns’ best efforts) it all feels like home.
Who needs a one sentence introduction when the links include a class-based analysis of the Taylor Swift video, Roxane Gay on nemeses, student journalists exposing (and ending!) their school’s prison labor contract, AND that article on Megan Rapinoe’s brother? This whole list is chock full of bangers!
