  1. I saw the news about the high school shooting on the Root this morning after I’d read the NYT and NPR online and seen no mention of it. I went back and searched both home pages for it.

There’s a mention of it on the NYT sidebar now. But it’s so sad/crazy that kids getting killed at school has become so common place it’s not even treated as a major story.

  2. Also thanks for the link on the black pride 4. I hadn’t heard much in the last few months and it’s absurd that they are still facing these chargers. For protesting at a damn protest. Glad there’s a funding page to help with the legal fees.

  3. I saw the “YA queer love stories” and “adopted black baby” articles fly by on my Twitter feed and thought, “I don’t have time to read these right now but I’m sure Autostraddle will link to them at some point.” Laneia, you have delivered.

  4. Ay, that’s Christian reform school piece. Hit me in the gut because it’s pretty personal for me. I really don’t think people, even devout Christians, know what “religious freedom” allows these schools to get away with. In Florida, where FACCCA is law, a group home/residential treatment center/rehab/boarding school/whatever just has to mention they’re Christian and they have ZERO governmental oversight except for the fire marshall. Literally that is how it works. So that allows these places to get away with everything from nailed down windows to food deprivation to physical abuse to educational neglect to medical neglect to sexual abuse (like strip searching thirteen year olds on a regular basis) to hiring absolutely unqualified individuals to provide the bulk of care to these children (e.g. homeless meth addicts straight out of rehab…or several. A real life example). But I guess you can’t expect much from organizations who think they can cure trauma, mental illness, addiction, etc with nothing other than Jesus and punishment.
