Also.Also.Also: Reparations for the War On Drugs and Other Stories You Can’t Miss

A new week, a new chance to do something weird and hopefully free. I’m trying to keep a basil plant and a mint plant alive on my countertop near a west-facing window, which isn’t weird or free. What are the odds of my success? Not good, probably. I don’t know the jargon of odds, but anyway just not good. Accepting all hot tips re: keeping herbs alive indoors.

  1. So I’m currently getting everything ready to teach history for the first time and that article about not learning queer history is really the whole reason I got into this. It’s super frustrating to see things get pushed to the sidelines, at best. That goes for the history of POC too. But I mean, like with everything else the field is dominated by cis straight white men. I don’t really know what to say about it, other than I’m nervous for the school year :/

  2. One of my former housemates kept a basil plant alive in our living room for a whole winter once, but she was one of those people with magic plant skills, so I don’t really know how she did it. All I know is they like a lot of heat and sunshine, but you probably already know that.

  3. > Laverne Cox Educates After ‘Breakfast Club’ Guest Jokes About Killing Trans Women.

“Host Angela Yee told him he should be “politically correct,” but [POS] responded, saying that comedians shouldn’t have to be.

“That’s the good thing I like about being me,” he said. “I can say what I want and do what I want and people understand where I’m coming from. They understand I’m not coming from a place of malice. They know I’m just speaking my mind.””

It’s now “politically correct” to suggest murdering trans people might be a bad idea? And that’s a concept not born out of malice? Am I *missing* something?

  4. The “abstinence only sex ed” article just…

If any of you have kids and want them to get a COMPREHENSIVE sex education, call your local Unitarian church and ask about the Our Whole Lives program. While it recommends abstinence as the safest form of sex (which like, duh) it also gives SCIENTIFIC AND USEFUL information about actual intercourse, gender, and sexual identity. I teach for grades 7-9 and 10-12 and we explain barrier methods, show how they work (INCLUDING INTERNAL CONDOMS AND DENTAL DAMS) and give non-scare tactic info.

  5. My mother advised me to always trim the flower buds off your basil, I guess so that it puts its energy into growing leaves? Or maybe it can’t complete its lifecycle, so it doesn’t die as soon? I don’t know, I just do it and I have two healthy basil plants (one Italian, one Thai).

Thanks for the Kermit article. I have always loved the Muppets, but I agree the tv show version was too cynical. The Muppets are supposed to be inspiring and uplifting, not jaded and bitter. That said, the new Kermit never sounded quite right to me, and if all the Henson kids think you’re a pain to work with, you probably are.

  6. According to my gardeny gf, you want aerated soil (like where the water moves through it fast, maybe with those chunkies in it?) for the basil, and if it starts going too yellow it’s getting too much sun. Make sure it has drainage holes in the pot, cut the flowers. For mint, lots of sun. It’s basically a weed if you put it in some sun. ?‍♀️?

      • The mint LOVES water. If you have a leaky faucet or a dripping ac unit stick it under there. It is basically is a delicious weed. Maybe put it near the sink and water it daily.
I’ve never had great luck with basil in a pot. In our garden we hide in between the tomatoes bc the leaves are deliciate and dry out in direct sun.
I do have one basil trick, you want to pinch off the leaves carefully leaving a pair of baby leaves on the stalk. If you do this right the plant branches out and makes more leaves. If you don’t, it gets leggy. I’m guessing the internets will have some visuals to explain this more clearly.
