  1. That firefighter article was very informative. I live in that area and didn’t know some of the firefighters were inmates or soo horribly underpaid. I knew that prisoners are underpaid, but would have thought inmates who are firefighters would get something closer to minimum wage.

    • I worked wildland fire about five years ago and you’d see the prison crews all over the place (although notice they hardly ever figure into news reports). Unfortunately with fire seasons getting worse and forest service and other firefighting orgs getting underfunded I can’t see these crews ever getting paid anything close to what they deserve. It’s not just the danger it’s the backbreaking nature of the work, the long hours (on fire it’s 16 hour days for 2 weeks straight then a few days to recuperate), and the skills needed to operate effectively and safely on the line. There’s a reason salary for civilian crews starts around 40-50K.

      Side note bc it bothered me: A pulaski is not a type of shovel. It just isn’t.
