Also.Also.Also: Lesbian and Transgender Hillbillies Casually Overtaking Republican Strongholds? Ok!

Well I hope your weekend was more productive than mine, or if it wasn’t, I hope that was your plan all along! Either way I think we should make pineapple upside-down cakes to celebrate this new week. I’m serious!

Queer as in F*ck You

+ Wait wait wait. WAIT. This is amazing and I’m so sorry it’s taken me all these days to talk about it with you! I am CRYING: ‘Lesbian and Transgender Hillbillies’ are Coming to Take Over Red States.

“The all-day summit will teach lesbian and transgender hillbillies how to get subsidies from the government like rural housing loans and ‘community facility grants.’ Bullying will also be discussed,” said the Beacon.

The only thing that could make this conservative panic any better is if someone wrote a country song about it. Maybe even — oh lord please hear my prayer — a murder ballad.

  1. Started from the bottom with that spoon article… Made me remember how much I wanted to learn to whittle when I was a Girl Scout wishing I was a Boy Scout. Putting that on my to do list for the long dark winter.

  2. Thanks for sharing the “Lesbian and Transgender Hillbillies” article! Now my wife and I know what to strive for! Our yard in the rural midwest has two peach trees, lots of raspberry plants, grape plants, and a vegetable garden in the front yard. (I like talking with the farmers’ at the farmer’s market but in reality it sounds like a lot of hard work. I do keep looking for lesbian and transgender farmers there with no luck, but I will persevere, or maybe just be the change I want to see.)

  3. Well I may be a bisexual hillbilly and I may be coming to take over a very red part of a blue state, but it’s true. Next month MY TAKEOVER BEGINS. I got my flannel shirt, I got my snapback, I downloaded that Her app in hopes that there may be a couple other girls nearby and I am ready. QUAKE IN YOUR BOOTS CONSERVATIVES. ALL YOUR FEARS ARE COMING TRUE

  4. Perhaps it is because I live in Kentucky and perhaps it is because these people know nothing about lesbians–but lesbian farmers are all the rage. Is there anything more romantic than two ladies growing corn and tomatoes?

  5. Ooh, the welfare piece. Thank you for that. 99% Invisible had a good episode on welfare reform recently, for anyone who is interested.

I was briefly pro-Barb, but am more or less meh-Barb after reading interviews in which Shannon Purser seems like kind of a dodo. She thinks queer people are into Barb because we feel so alone. I’m pretty sure it’s just because Barb read as hella gay, but okay. I’m just glad there’s another season.

Can you guys help me with something? Is Ellen Page a good actress? I am prepared to just love her no matter what because of how active she is in bringing us queer content, but. The last thing I saw her in was Freeheld and I couldn’t tell whether it was the writing or what. I kind of don’t think it was just the writing.

  6. “I never before in my life knew that lesbians wanted to be farmers. I never knew that lesbians wanted to get behind the horse and the plow and start burrowing. I never knew it.”

Rush Limbaugh would have been better off saying this:

“I know nothing about lesbians but they scare me to death anyway.”

  7. Rush need a good kick in face, just for being him. But, I am more mad that lesbians want to be part of the farming-industrial complex and racists and bigoted system designed to promote land destruction, illegal growing tactics, and the underpaying of employees(and if you are a tobacco farmer the use of free child labor as a summer work program). And don’t get me started on the United States Department of Agriculture, who in years time frame gets sued more than Trump has been all his life.

  8. That article about the trans woman coming out to her wife had me in tears a little. I am glad her ending was happy, cause for some of us that never happens.

I hope she(Emily the author) writes about the legalities of her marriage, cause I haven’t seen many storied about the legal costs, and red-tape trans people who are married before coming out may have to face. Like is it just a simple paper work filling that both of them have to sing? Or is there more to it?

    • I don’t really understand the question. If you’re married, you’re married. Especially now that same-sex marriage is legal throughout the country, the fact that one spouse transitions doesn’t affect the legality or status of the marriage at all — whether the marriage began as a heterosexual marriage and is now a same-sex marriage, or the reverse. There shouldn’t be any red tape or legal costs involved at all, beyond those necessitated by the transition process itself.

    • We have quite a few rural dykes, some who farm, in Massachusetts, too. And nobody hassles us about it or seems to mind at all. It’s a totally normal thing to be out here.

And I don’t know any who get federal funds.

  9. Ooo a Lesbian and Trans Hillbilly murder ballad! The podcast Criminal had an episode on these awhile back. But I’d hate for something ghastly to happen to our queer famer friends in order to inspire a toe-tapping murder ballad. How about it’s a murder ballad about the patriarchy?

    • Oh yes definitely — I’m hoping for a murder ballad where the queer farmers kill the patriarchy as well as any dreams that conservatives might have of living in a world where queer people don’t exist.
