Also.Also.Also: Cheryl Strayed’s New Dear Sugar Podcast and Other Stories We Missed

What a fucking day! Did you wake up wanting to punch an inflatable Yogi Bear punching bag? Did you have one of those growing up? My friend Jennifer did, or maybe it was Jessica, but either way that motherfucker was fun to hit and no one ever bothered to buy me one when I was little and I think that has a lot to do with my repressed need to punch things sometimes. But hey let’s talk about the real issues, like D’Angelo’s new album and the fact that Cheryl Strayed has a Dear Sugar podcast now! Here are some things we missed since the last time we missed things. I like your shirt.

Queer As In F*ck You

+ Democrats Call for Protections LGBT Unaccompanied Children.

+ Out Swedish skier Anja Paerson thinks the International Olympic Committee needs to do better to prevent LGBT discrimination and such.

+ Oh do you want 37 Trans Anthems by Trans Musicians for your earholes on this fine beautiful Monday? Because there you go.

+ A Front Row View of Lesbian Foot Washing. The author of this piece is described as “a gynaecologist and obstetrician, comedian and poet” and I kinda want to meet him based on these things alone.

+ DIY: Watch This Lesbian Couple’s Successful Attempt at Home Artificial Insemination. You first.

+ Queer Women Musicians Working in a Traditionally Sexist, Male-Centric Music Scene.

+ Homeless Shelter for LGBT Youth to Open in San Antonio. NICE WORK, TEXAS.

Doll Parts

+ Um excuse me but your leggings are not pants, according to Montana lawmakers. And somewhere in the world, Carmen Rios can be found not giving a single fuck.

+ Gender Segregation of Toys Is On the Rise la la la.

+ On Jezebel, Randi Weingarten (president of the 1.6 million-member American Federation of Teachers) brings some real shit and talks action: Rape Is Part of My Truth, and the Truth of Many Other Women.

When Rolling Stone issued its retraction, my greatest fear was that we would once again have a curtain of silence, where young women feel too afraid to share their truth. And while I have no interest in reliving the experience or pinning culpability on anyone, that curtain of silence is why I am sharing my story today publicly for the first time.

This is my truth.

+ Shonda Rhimes on (not actually) breaking through glass ceilings. Just read the whole damn thing, then print it on card stock in 30pt font and tape it up around your room like it’s 1st grade and each page is a letter of the alphabet.

If I’d broken the glass ceiling, that would mean I would have made it through to the other side. Where the air is rare. I would feel the wind on my face. The view from here — way up here where the glass ceiling is broken — would be incredible. Right? So how come I don’t remember the moment? When me with my woman-ness and my brown skin went running full speed, gravity be damned, into that thick layer of glass and smashed right through it? How come I don’t remember that happening?

Here’s why: It’s 2014.

This moment right here, me standing up here all brown with my boobs and my Thursday night of network television full of women of color, competitive women, strong women, women who own their bodies and whose lives revolve around their work instead of their men, women who are big dogs, that could only be happening right now.

Think about it.

+ Some stupid parents in California with wayyyyy too much fucking time on their hands are upset that Planned Parenthood is like, helping their kids be responsible fucking humans. (Literally! Oh!) I mean what a shitty deal, right? Useful, honest and diverse education in schools. Who tha fuck wants it! Not these jabrones! (Jabrones (jah-BRO-nz) is plural for jabroni ok, that’s how we say it over here in my living room. UD wants to tell you that jabronis is the correct plural form but GUESS WHAT the person who wrote that shit is a jabroni, so.) No way no thank you!

Planned Parenthood has a long history of providing comprehensive sexual health information to teens, and it’s not uncommon for them to partner with school districts. Although conservative opponents have argued that Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be allowed to provide sex ed in public schools — suggesting there must be some kind of ulterior motive to convince kids to get pregnant and have abortions — a recent study confirmed that a sex ed curriculum developed by the group effectively helps kids delay having sex.

Good lord.

! Thanks, Verónica Bayetti Flores!

+ Clearing Land Mines Becomes Women’s Work in Mozambique and Beyond by Katya Cengel.

+ Mallory Ortberg woke up one morning like, “You know what this place needs? Some misandrist prayers.” And she was right. And she was good.

“Lord, make me an instrument of female domination;
where there is maleness, let me sow femaleness;
where there are men talking, men silent;
where there are men smiling, men cowering;
where there are men hopeful, men suppliant;
where there are men going to work, men sitting quietly;
and where there is male sadness, female joy.”

Hot Cockles: The rules are straightforward. One blindfolded player kneels and rests his or her head in somebody’s lap. Another participant then lightly smacks the kneeler’s backside, and the blindfolded party would have to guess who did it.

  1. My good friend stayed in tht shelter for a brief time after being kicked out of his home by his homophobic mother. He said they made him feel welcome for the duration of his stay, and he has now found a safe place at his aunt’s. That shelter probably saved his life, and I’m very thankful for it.

  2. I’m a graduate of that school district and it’s about as awful as you’d expect. My heart goes out to all the baby queers (and esp trans teens) whose identities are being blatantly shit upon by grown-ass adults in the name of “religious freedom”. Gonna go be angry and sad now.

  3. Thank you, once again I have 12 tabs open.

    1- Very positive step for Texas! Sad that there are so many homeless LGBT youth though. My heart goes out to them. :(

    2- Ruby Rose’s “Break Free” is such a beautiful music video.

    3- I think using headphones/earbuds to avoid social interaction is a universal introvert thing, it’s just innate introvert knowledge.

    4- FINALLY I know what wassailing means, and I think we should most definitely bring this tradition back! And also #9. (And lol @ #5)
