We Need Help: Hiring Writers and an Associate Editor!

Hey, are you interested in sacrificing all your free time and possibly also your social life and sanity? Then writing for Autostraddle might be for you!

BEST JOB EVER!!!

BEST JOB EVER!!!

Your wildest dreams are within reach. We need help. Specifically, we need “help” in one of two formats: Contributing Editors and an Associate Editor. If you wanna help out the editorial team but have no editorial abilities, don’t despair — you can totally give us money and we can use that money to pay writers and raise the Associate Editor’s stipend!

For all of these positions we are especially interested in applications from trans* women and women of color.

This is a really special time for Autostraddle — the redesign will launch soon and then the entire world will explode into sunshine and rainbows! This is our time to shine!

Contributing Editors

Time Commitment:

You’ll need a significant portion of one weekday free each week to be “on call” and write a post that week based on important news. You’ll also be writing a “regular” — a weekly column on a chosen topic/theme. (For example: Brittani’s Video Party, Make a Thing, Straddler on the Street, Prairie Homo Companion, Almost Famous, Butch Please.)

That meets your requirement for at least two posts a week, but we’ll encourage you to write even more than that!

You’ll also be a part of daily reply-alls covering The Issues of the Day and be welcome to pitch and write stories on other topics whenever you want.

Who We’re Looking For:

Those applying for this position must be web-savvy, have a unique, well-developed style and voice, lots of your own ideas and impeccable grammar/spelling. Your sentence structure should be so readable it practically reads itself. Your facts must be checked and double-checked and maybe even triple-checked.

You must be obsessively detail-oriented as well as a self-starter comfortable working independently and taking initiative. Laneia would like you to be “quirky” and “super interested in something really weird that no one else has jumped on yet.”

You also must be eager to BE A REPORTER. Be prepared to hit the pavement and hunt down compelling stories, attend events, report on local activism (if there is any), cold-call potential sources and interview people both in person and on the phone. If you live somewhere far away from other queers or feminists, that’s totally fine and we want you on our team! But you’ll need to be cool with making phone calls to get stories. This is non-negotiable, so if you’re not comfortable calling people, then this probably isn’t the right position for you. (In other words — don’t lie about it! People are always lying about this for some reason.)

You will be honest with yourself and with us and also reliable — not likely to have a mental breakdown or to deal with personal issues by ignoring emails! Working from a distance, rather than in a communal office, requires impeccable accountability and excessive communication.

Experience/Background:

+ Basic knowledge of HTML and some kind of blogging platform
+ Online writing experience (personal blogs count)
+ Strong background in queer and feminist issues
+ Knowledge of and familiarity with all things Autostraddle and the queer internet
+ Expertise in at least three subject areas (could be anything from “science fiction” to “gay rights in Australia” to “fashion” or really anything.)
+ Comfort with social media
+ Comfort with having your photograph & name on the internet

How to Apply:

Send resumé (PDF), cover letter (in the body of the email) and writing samples to laneia [at] autostraddle [dot] com. Please cc laura [at] autostraddle dot com, rachel [at] autostraddle dot com and riese [at] autostraddle [dot] com. Put “Contributing Editor” in the subject line.

Your cover letter should answer the following questions:

+ What’s your availability?
+ Why the hell do you want to do this?
+ What are your three areas of expertise?
+ What are your career/life goals and how does this fit into that?

We also need:

+ Two story pitches.
+ A pitch for your “regular”
+ Two clips in the form of links to your published writing (again, blogs count) or a PDF of clips.

What’s In It For You:

The primary drawback to being an independently-owned website without ties to any umbrella advertising groups is that we run on a shoestring budget and therefore cannot pay you with actual money. (Yet!) We’re well aware that this sucks and if we had any agency to change the situation, we would. We do Autostraddle because we believe in it, we believe in the importance of growing this community, and we believe in what we can accomplish together. Paying writers is important and whenever we do have any financial security, we pass that on to you (e.g., last year’s end-of-the-year holiday bonuses)!

However, we do our best to give you everything we can, short of that. We offer you emotional rewards, free stuff (e.g., books, CDs, t-shirts), free and/or discounted AS merchandise, the opportunity to apply to be on the A-Camp Team (and thus be a part of camp for free), killer recommendations, press passes to events and financial reimbursement for any expenses incurred while doing your “job.”

You’ll learn a lot about writing/the world, build an impressive portfolio, learn valuable skills for future employment, join a kickass team of passionate queer women, have the freedom to write about the things you care about, and will enjoy truly being a part of THE REVOLUTION. Plus, you know, “exposure” on a site that garners almost 3 million views a month and is the second-largest queer lady website in the universe. Autostraddle writers have gone on to secure gainful employment or snag freelance assignments at places like Gawker, Refinery 29, ReadWriteWeb, The Feminist Press, The Awl, Bitch Magazine, xojane, The Huffington Post and so many more!

Most of all, you should have fun! This means that you should consider writing, researching and working really hard to be “fun.” We do!

Please submit your application on or before Friday, July 5th.

As mentioned in the Contributing Editor section, a drawback to being an independently-owned website is that we run on a shoestring budget. The Associate Editor reaps the following:

+ A whopping $500 a month stipend

+ Invited to attend A-Camp as staff (for free, obvs) with travel expenses also covered

+ Free stuff (e.g., books, CDs, t-shirts), free and/or discounted AS merchandise

+ Press passes to events

+ Financial reimbursement for any expenses incurred while doing your “job.”

+ Opportunities for further advancement/raises when our fortunes improve

As with being a contributing editor — you’ll learn a lot about writing/the world, build an impressive portfolio, join a kickass team of passionate queer women, have the freedom to write about the things you’re passionate about, and will enjoy truly being a part of THE REVOLUTION. Plus, you know, “exposure” on a site that garners almost 3 million views a month and is the second-largest queer lady website in the universe.

Most of all, you should have fun! This means that you should consider writing, researching and working really hard to be “fun.” We do!

To Apply:

Send resumé (PDF), cover letter (in the body of the email) to laneia [at] autostraddle [dot] com, please cc rachel [at] autostraddle dot com and riese [at] autostraddle [dot] com. Put “Associate Editor” in the subject line.

Your cover letter should answer the following questions:

+ What’s your availability?
+ Why the hell do you want to do this?
+ What do you think you could bring to Autostraddle that Autostraddle needs?
+ What are your career/life goals and how does this fit into that?

We’ll also need:

+ three story pitches
+ writing samples or links to work published online

Please submit your application on or before Friday, July 5th.

We will be reading over your applications between July 7th and 14th and if we wanna hire you, we’ll be getting back to your shortly after that time. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, we can only respond to those we accept.

If you already work here in a different capacity, you can still apply!

Special Note for all applicants: Unfortunately, having a passionate love for Autostraddle isn’t enough to make a good intern/writer/editor. This makes us sad too, ’cause we wish we had time to hire and work with everybody! But we don’t. And just because we don’t have space for you on the team doesn’t mean that we don’t want to keep seeing your face commenting and appreciating and sharing and tweeting and camping and being part of the conversation. There’s something specific we’re looking so please don’t take it personally if you don’t hear back from us. We often have to turn down exemplary writers simply because we also are looking at overall team diversity (in all its forms) when we make decisions.

Please don’t apply if you can’t meet deadlines, don’t understand proper sentence structure, can’t reply to emails, aren’t funny, are addicted to more than three substances or don’t have any free time. Also, we’re a media company, not a making-friends factory. Apply because you want to do the work. This isn’t a hobby (though it pays like one!) and revolutions don’t make themselves.

WE ARE EXCITED TO HEAR ALL ABOUT YOU!

Before you go! Autostraddle runs on the reader support of our AF+ Members. If this article meant something to you today — if it informed you or made you smile or feel seen, will you consider joining AF and supporting the people who make this queer media site possible?

  1. I think my dream job just became to someday write for Auto Straddle! oh I wish I had the time! this would be amazing.

  2. Gah! How I wish I didn’t have so many college-y obligations so I could apply. Maybe someday.

  3. Oh, autostraddle! I would learn html just to write for you, you know, but being in term three of a creative writing MA means all my free time is already crammed with compulsive scribblings. Unless perhaps you wouldn’t want me until October…?!

    • I can promise based on experience that Bren will love any and all future autostraddle people with all her heart.

  4. I might actually be able to apply this time around since I currently have abundant free time! *leaves this tab up on laptop to stare at for rest of day and/or until inspiration strikes*

    • P.S. While writing a note to myself, I somehow combined the words “resume” and “sample” into “resumple.” And I think that resumple should now be a real word because it’d be fun to say out loud. And I also think that it’s way too hot in Pennsylvania today and so I’m kind of delirious maybe?

  5. guys an added bonus that this post does not mention is that if you are a contributing editor you get to read about ALL MY FEELINGS in the daily email thread. what kind of feelings, you may ask. feelings about what, you may wonder. the answer to those questions is ALL THE FEELINGS ABOUT EVERYTHING EVER. i know, i know, the job just got EVEN MORE ENTICING.

no but for real i am excited about this. come write with us, please!

    • Seconding Vanessa’s feelings as a hidden added bonus of being a contributing editor.

also I am excited for all of you!

    • FEELINGS may actually be the greatest enticement yet. I think you should all know that I am fast choosing to prioritise autostraddle above sleep, and may fling myself upon your mercies next week, despite the upcoming run of deadlines…

Um, you say that writers living hermit-like in isolation or distant countryside is okay. How do you feel about the countryside in Britain?

  6. YES, COME WORK FOR AUTOSTRADDLE, COME GET EMAILS FROM ME ALL DAY EVERY DAY!

Seriously. I will email you all day every day. Sometimes I’m even funny.

  7. what a dream, to be part of the autostraddle team! sadly i can’t draft a cohesive text let alone article. if you ever need another illustrator do let us know.

  8. I really wish I could do this! Either of these positions would be a really good start for my career goals. Also it would be really rad. Ahh, someday.

  9. Ahh this is great! I always get way too excited when there are new article series.

Some wonderful writer with global connections should pitch a queer travel/”Queers Around the World” regular article thingy. It would be super interesting to learn about queer life in various countries across the globe!

  10. “super interested in something really weird that no one else has jumped on yet.”

I can not WAIT for this to be fulfilled. I need to read about more weird things.

  11. @kathryn
    HOLLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you require references for this position? cos’ I’m all over that shit.
She has a fullon proper smarty pants degree in English and is clever as fuck and FUNNIER THAN ANYONE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.
    Make it happen, Daniel.

  12. Question re: phonecalls, would this include transnational stuff if you’re not based in the US? In fact, how open is the writer position to non-USians (actively looking, no difference, okay with it but not preferred…?) — I won’t take offence if it isn’t, just wondering!

    • we’re super duper open to everyone on planet earth and also the universe.

if you’re creative, hilarious, honest and self-motivated, i want to meet you! via email! GET IN MY INBOX.

    • I actually thought the same thing. Most of my writing comes in the form of Twilight fanfics…I have no clue how I got away with that in school. Awkward.

      • Someone else got away with it on the NYT best seller list, so you’re in good company…?

    • if it’s something you wrote, it’s a writing sample! it’s always best if your writing samples show us the strengths you plan to utilize when writing for AS, and that’s really up to you to decide.

  13. this job has changed my life! if you are a writer and want your life to be changed, this is where you belong. you also belong to the light, and to the thunder.

    • guys without this job cara would never have realized her true destiny as hat benatar.

  14. You know what, I was so close to applying, but I realized several things:

While I am passionate, fairly good at writing, and comfortable with the online sphere of communication, this just isn’t the right time for me. I’ve only finished a year and some change of college, I’m not terribly experienced, and my best pitch would be “American Queer’s Adventures in London,” which would only last from September until December, and then where would I be?

Writing for Autostraddle would be a dream come true. I love this website, what it’s taught me and so many others, and the potential it still has. The writers are already fantastic, and it’s a rare day where my boredom can’t be assuaged by rifling through old articles as well as newer ones I’ve missed.

I guess what I’m saying is, call me again when I’m better prepared to be an advocate for myself. I promise that I will work as hard as I can to develop as a writer and as a human being until then. Watch me go.

I’ll see you all soon. :)

  15. When you say “Autostraddle is Hiring” don’t you really mean to say, “Autostraddle is Looking for Glorified Volunteers” or “Autostraddle is Looking for People to be Kind of Like Unpaid Interns”?

If things didn’t cost money, I’d apply in heartbeat, but alas, I cannot pay for food in the eclectic feminist queer humor spawn of my amazing.

I just can’t, and I have a lot of feelings about it.

    Excuses, excuses…

    • For someone who identifies intensely as being both queer and a writer with stories to tell, being able to write for a platform like autostraddle and work with the people both behind the scenes and those who interface with the site everyday is like a wet dream come-literally-true. For some, at least. And It rubs me the wrong way to see you calling a team of people who do good work, put in significant time, and give freely of themselves through their writing ‘glorified volunteers.’

Yes, they volunteer their time. But they are every bit exceptional for what they do, mostly because they do it well and they do it despite knowing that things cost money, and they need food.

So please have your feelings (feelings are super important), make your excuses, and engage your internal debate, but try not to (maybe unintentionally? but I doubt it?) deprecate what it means to write for autostraddle.

  16. I applied, but now I’m kind of worried they’ll look at my email and laugh. :/ Pretty sure what I find interesting might just be really boring to everyone else…oh, well, A for effort, I guess. :P
