Too Poor For A-Camp? We Have a Scholarship For That!

Hello Ye Impoverished Ones — because Autostraddle readers are essentially the best people on the entre internet, some people who cannot attend the first-ever A-Camp but who feel lucky to be able to afford it have stepped forward to express a desire to pay for one of YOU to go in their stead. Thus we have reserved some Camp Autostraddle spots for Sponsored Sapphists.

If you apply for an A-Camp Sponsorship, you must be capable of getting your ass to the campsite. Please do not apply for a scholarship if you’re unable to actually use it!

Here’s what you need to do:

1) Email laneia [at] autostraddle dot com, cc riese [at] autostraddle [dot] com with 400-1,000 words explaining why you deserve a camp scholarship! Please also let us know how old you are, where you’re from, and your tentative plans for getting to camp.

2) You may be responsible for providing your sponsor with delightful notes about how happy you are to go to camp and how much fun you’re having at camp with photographic evidence of such fun.

3) If you lie on your application, not only will “2” be a constant reminder of your dishonesty, but furthermore your inherent guilt over lying about your financial desperation will haunt you for all of your days and cast a dark shadow over your otherwise sushiney Camp experience. Just keep that in mind.

4) If you didn’t have a chance to register before registration filled up, this is not a way to circumvent that! We’re doing our best to figure out how to get as many of you there as possible, and for sure there will be a waitlist and more info about that will come soon.

5) Please submit your application essay before bedtime on Tuesday, February 21st.

  1. Yes, all you sponsors, you deserve…you deserve all the best things, the very best. You are the best! I want to be like you when I grow up/get a real job.

(Also, this isn’t linked to the above, even though it might sound like it, but I just wrote out an application for a plane ticket sponsor – on account of being able to afford camp, but not the transatlantic flight – because I was too excited to read itallics properly, apparently. SO, if anyone is a pilot/has a private jet, I have a letter full of heartfelt reasons/all the things I’ll do to express my lifelong gratitude. And it’s yours, in as long as it takes to hit send. fyi.)

  2. Also, also: if a lot of people contributing pretty small amounts could be helpful for getting another person to go, I would do that?

    • Same! I can’t afford to go, but I could afford to donate money to some kind of pool so someone else could go.

  3. Can we apply even if we have already put a deposit down? Ticket prices went up like 100 dollars overnight! If they don’t go back down I just don’t know…

  4. YAY, its a real thing now! As promised I will donate what I am able ( so not a lot but at least some) to the pool.

  5. I’m with Jottum, where do we sign up to help with the pool of scholarship money. I don’t have much, but if a lot of us with a little put in a little more maybe the ones with nothing can come too.

    • If 20 people give $5 (you know, the cost of a starbucks latte or a subway 12-inch) THAT IS $100 omg

And judging from the comments on the A-camp post, there are like TOTALLY at least 60 people who can help one more person go!

Also, yes I would totally put some money forth because once upon a time I was a sad lonely homo and if something like this existed, I wouldn’t be so jaded and un-fun to hang out with now.

Come on guys, let’s help lesbians be lesbians!

  6. See, I’m in the position where I can pay for camp but not the plane ticket to get there. I’ve never hated studying abroad more in my life. If I was at home, not that big of a deal to get to camp. Instead, I’m in England and can’t afford the flight.

    This saddens me.

  7. This makes my heart so happy. Autostraddle readers are some of the best people on the planet. Hats off to you, whoever you are!

  8. I turn 24 that weekend. Either way, it’s a great idea and I’d love to be a part of something like this. Let’s try New York in next year?

  9. My favorite thing about this: it makes me feel good about humanity for once.
My second favorite thing about this: essays are due before bedtime.

  10. Can I apply for a scholarship for my friend? She thinks she doesn’t deserve one but she so deeply does, and she would both be an amazing contribution to camp and get the most out of it I can imagine anyone getting.

And she could get herself there, if accepted.

  11. who should we contact if we would like to give a scholarship? So excited this is happening for everyone who can go!

  12. hey guys all of your offers are so fantastic! unfortunately, registration is full, and we only accounted for a certain number of scholarship spots within those final numbers. as much as i loathe to reject offers of philanthropy, it’s just not feasible to add any more sponsorship spots right now. we also have a huge waitlist of campers who didn’t register before it was full that we need to take into account should more spots clear up. but there’s always next time!

  13. Once again proving that Autostraddlers are the best people on the entire internet. Have fun at camp, y’all!

  14. Hey Riese,

Maybe the extra philanthropy can go into flight/transportation financial assistance for the scholarship recipients who need it.

I know this might be a lot to organize. If you would like help, I volunteer.

  15. Thank you for the auspicious writeup. It in fact
was a entertainment account it. Look complex to more delivered agreeable from you!
However, how can we keep in touch?
