I think i’ve saved all of these columns in pocket on my laptop. I love these! im pretty sure this has been the cause of me procrastinating doing my chemistry problem sets multiple times. Also i read the one by jennifer kahn earlier this year; its a very interesting read.

I spent a couple of hours reading that, fixated on the people involved, looking at every detail. And I still came away feeling wow and sad and unbelievably bad for the people lost in the avalanche.

I think I understand it. I just think it’s so wrong. The way I perceived it, she’s using the shock value of rape to prove what she wanted to prove. She could have just as easily picked another type of story. Or she could of called it fiction. Or she could of asked for the women whose story she was telling for their permission and told us about that consent. I also hate the way she ads that she was sexually assaulted in the end (without giving any details about her assault whereas she’s talking about these women’s rapes as if she was there) as if that gave her ownership over other people’s stories.
I just feel this piece violates so many people, what she tries to tell us is so unmeaningful in comparison (basically she’s asking people to check their facts).
But maybe that’s the whole point. Demonstrating with a counter-example. It still feels morally wrong.

Am I the only person to be completely disgusted by the way Talbot used those peoples stories in her piece about creative non-fiction. I understand she’s trying to make a point, but shouldn’t one practise what they preach ? This stuff actually happened and still happens to people all the time. And it hurts like hell.

The creative nonfiction article was pretty much mind blowing, and the HIV one was a really interesting perspective I’m somewhat ashamed to say I hadn’t even considered. The child psychopath story was kinda terrifying.

As for “All of America, and Parking Too” – he mentions the joy that is a day trip to Valley Forge, but fails to mention the 450+ store megamall (most retail space in the country) less than five minutes down the street! King of Prussia, PA: 3,500 acres of colonial history and retail heaven, all in an afternoon! Come visit us, it’s pretty great.

Side note: I want to go to Edmonton.
