To what extent do you think their outrage and defining claims of purity were self protection in an era when it was not safe to be outed, or the sanitizing reinterpretations of a later age?

They referred to one another in their diaries as “my beloved” and Anne Lister did write that she “could not ‘help thinking that surely it was not platonic’” (Graham Robb, quoting Lister in _Strangers_).

This query calls for an investigative pilgrimage!

Emma Donoghue is a pretty prolific Irish writer, although she know lives in Canada. She’s definitely a more recent lesbian in Irish public life, and her writing is awesome!

I love this story! Although, sadly the ladies were quite offended when rumours and visiting guests suggested they were lesbians and quite robustly denied the charge. They wanted their romantic friendship not to be sullied by such a claim.
