I think heteronormativity goes further – not just in terms of assuming heterosexuality but also in terms of gender roles within those relationships. For example, it’s heterosexist when people assume I must be straight; it’s heteronormative when people assume that and ALSO that I would be changing my name when I married a man (as I’ve heard a lot since I’m planning on changing my last name to match my mom/stepdad, and people act like it’s weird that I’m going to do that when I’m in my 20s because of course I’ll be getting married and changing my name again soon enough).

So excited about this column! I believe that sometimes autostraddle can see into my soul, because just as I’m getting more into my dissertation (on the selection and use of sexual identity labels in youth) you guys start a fabulous column on words! So excited!!

Also, I’m sure others have suggested it, but queer would be a great addition.

Word nerds unite!

Well written column on an interesting and complex subject. When I first read about the AP’s decision, I was frankly impressed that they were tackling this problem in such a head-on manner. Much of my work involves following AP Style Guide rules, so this is especially relevant to me.

But I was glad to read this piece, which brought up a lot of good counter-arguments, too. Ultimately, I’d have to agree that we need more words, not less, and that simply crossing your arms and insisting that everyone should understand every word based on its original technical construction doesn’t really solve any problems.
