Spring Style for Girls Who Like Dresses, Heels, and Flowers!

Lily

Posted by

Guess what guys? Spring is finally here! And you know what that means? Girls in short skirts! No, but seriously, I love spring and sunshine and dresses! I’ve been dreaming of flowy floral dresses and open toed shoes for so long now that the fact I can finally wear them all feels like a dream.

I must lay a disclaimer out here though — I do not know what is “in” in fashion. My style is based solely on my visceral reaction to the  item of clothing that I decide, or decide not, to wear. Dressing up (plus coffee and diet coke) gets me through the day. It makes me feel good. The only thing that got me out of the bed in the morning during high school was knowing that I had an exciting outfit planned out to wear. Whether dressing up is what puts you in a good mood, dressing down is what keeps you sane, or perhaps a mix of both is how you feel most comfortable rolling, I believe that style should be a positive and personal aspect in everyone’s life, no matter how conscious you are about outward appearances.

Spring Dresses

+
Not everyone is a dress person, this I know quite well. But I think that a good majority of Autostraddle readers can at least appreciate the dress by wearing one and/or looking at other ladies wearing one. Floral dresses are always fun, especially for spring. But really any dress that makes you feel good is the perfect choice.

These dresses from Topshop and Urban Outfitters cost a bit more than you might like to pay, but you can always find similar styles at your local thrift store!

Also a good romper can really bring out the best in spring, if you find the right one. But be careful, if you don’t get the right romper you may end up looking like one of the Von Trapp children.

Romper and combat boots

One of my favorite things to pair with an ultra feminine dress or romper is a pair of combat-style boots. It creates the always fashionable dichotomy between a soft look and a rough look.

I clean in high heels. That’s right. I hate all things domestic, i.e. cleaning, cooking, baking, organizing, etc. But sometimes I have no choice but to suck it up and do an essential domestic task. This is where the heels come in. If I am forced to do some sort of domestic chore, I will be wearing heels. It makes walking around so much more fun and also allows me to forget about my unfortunate lack of height while pretending that Tyra Banks has just crowned me America's Next Top Model. (Speaking of crowns…if there just so happens to be some sort of tiara in the vicinity of where I am cleaning, there’s a chance I will maybe, sort of, perhaaaps put it on, like you know, maybe…)

I’m a strong believer in the idea that heels are always appropriate (just ask Posh Spice) but they are especially fun to wear in the spring!

Flower printed pumps (A) would be perfect to wear while cleaning the shower! A lower wedge heel (B), or perhaps flat sandal (C) might be a bit more comfortable for taking a stroll in the park on on a beautiful spring afternoon.

Other essentials for spring are shorts and big bags to carry all of your stuff in! (If you're like us and cannot possibly afford that super-cuteathon bag, you can get some on sale here) I never thought I would be a fan of floral print shorts, but these ones from Forever 21 are quite adorable.

BlazerBut Springtime Doesn't Always Equal Warmth...

+

Unfortunately, spring in many areas of the world doesn't necessarily bring the warmest weather possible. So don't forget to wear tights under your dresses and sweaters over your rompers so as not to be too cold when taking an early spring day walk.

Plus, blazers go well with everything, especially this one. You don't even have to put on pants to wear it!

Still not inspired to find your spring style? Then go outside, take a walk, ride a bike, and get inspired by the world around you!

Great article :) I love shoes! Watch out for Oxfords for Spring/Summer ’10, they’re back in style, caged heels, ruffle details, straps to the ankles, shoe-boots and ankle-boots.

It’s definitely possible to wear non-Converse, trendy shoes and be comfortable.

Yeah oxfords!!! Oxfords and variations on wing tip shoes are gonna be everrrrrywhere this summer. I’m so looking forward to it. It just makes you look sharp. I also really like that compliment. Looking sharp.

It’s so true about thrift stores. Even in the highly competitive thrifting market of SF, I was able to find half a dozen floral print, perfectly Springtime dresses for $20 or less.

Hint: End of the month sales can knock off an extra 20%-40% from already crazy low price tags.

    DO IT.

You can get up to 75%-80% off items! Especially with the tacit “this has been on our racks for over two weeks” additional discounts they dole out willy-nilly. LOVE.

I was not a huge fan of rompers either…and I’m definitely still a little wary of them. But sometimes they are super cute! I promise!

Praise Dolly for the Buffalo Exchange. I did rompers in Summer of ’08 and while some are ultra-adorable, I have decided that I am too old to wear anything that makes pissing tricky.

      Jumpsuits? Sorry, makes peeing hard.
Rompers? Yeah, hard to pee. Especially if drunk.
Leotards? Never was a fan, but now it’s out of the question (thank God).

I’ll leave all that to the younguns.

Cute clothes, but I would expect a lesbian blogger to not be promoting Urban Outfitters, as the owner openly financially supports initiatives against same-sex marriage.

    1. Lily

I actually did not know that and was just picking stuff that I thought was cute. Urban Outfitters often has a styles that can be easily mimicked through thrift store shopping, which is why I like using their pictures. But I will definitely be more careful next time. Thanks for the heads up.

Aw shit, I always liked UO. No more. :(

No prob – I also like their styles and often do mimic (but not buy from them). Etsy.com has a lot of comparable pieces as well from independent designers. I think it’s important that we stay socially aware – even with fashion – about the purchases we make.

Thank you for this, I had no idea either! Damnit, I just bought a book there a week ago! I will have to counter this purchase somehow…but where?

      1. Fit For A Femme

See, I don’t shop at Forever 21 and RARELY at UO, but now I reckon I have no choice. Who / what else? (I sniff a new post. Something like “Lesbian chic from head-to-toe: Know your fashion from your foe!” – wait, that sounds like a Legally Blonde rally cry. Never mind.)

With this and the Buy Queer contest promo, I’m thinking that A/S should have a post of awesome shops by & for queer people. ;)

Hey, what about us Australians? WHY ARE YOU RACIST AGAINST THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE? (j/k, obvs)

Seriously, though, spring/summer fashions spreads from the great North always make me sad. Although it’s tempered when the fall/winter ones show up and I can be all “HAH SUCK IT BITCHES”

    *sigh*

I love girls who like dresses, heels, and flowers! lol.

I also like the combat style boots and wish I could wear a spring dress without catching flack like I do for my adoration of hot pink nail polish. But what can a girl do? After all, it IS just as much fun to put on a blazer and run around after rompers.
