BAD NEWS! As the author of this Milwaukee city guide, I’m very sorry to report that Mona’s — a bar mentioned in the guide — has closed. They had one last shindig on Pridefest weekend in mid-June and then closed their doors to the sounds of Donna Summer singing “Last Dance.” We await the next great thing, I guess, but do so somewhat sulkily. RIP Mona’s.

Bay View <3 I only lived in Milwaukee for a year (in the hypersegregated Latino neighborhood North of Bay View) but I miss OUTPOST. !! And Rushmor is indeed a great music shop, bought a Drugstore CD there and the guy gave me a shirt on the house for my birthday that I still wear frequently. Never explored the LGBT stuff out there, nice to know it exists though!

I live in Wisconsin (farther north, closer to Green Bay) but I’d never been out in Milwaukee before. My old college best friends/roommates all met up this pasty year to stay with another friend there and celebrate New Years. We ended up mostly hopping back and forth between The Pint and LaCage (which are across the street from one another).
My straight female friend ended up making out with a cute girl at the Pint while I had no luck. Then, some guy whom I was drunkenly speaking Spanish/dancing with (and assumed was gay), tried to put his hand up my shirt at LaCage. It was freezing, we couldn’t find a cab and all our phones died. In short, it was pretty awesome (minus Handsy McGee). Lots of interesting memories. I’d definitely go back again sometime… with better planning, of course.
Besides the gay bar scene, Miller Park, Summerfest, etc. I don’t have much else to share about Milwaukee. But I should add that it does have a bit of a reputation for being somewhat dangerous. However, I’m sure part of that is the fact that it’s a big city juxtaposed with the rest of Wisconsin. It’s one of the two cities in the state (the other being Madison) that have a very un-Wisconsin-like, yet still Wisconsin feel. I’m not sure if that makes sense.
