Playlist: Broadway Belters

One of life’s many great epic tragedies is that I no longer live in New York City and my Dearest Eternal Intern Grace also does not live in New York City, which means neither of us are present in New York City for the just-extended-’til-August Broadway run of Newsies, based on the best worst film of all time!

It’s especially fun because two people I actually know in real life are in Newsies and they’re constantly posting about it on Facebook and making me more jealous than I am of the people posting about going on vacation and buying things.

Where was I? Oh yes, sad that the Broadway Cast recording of Newsies hasn’t come out yet, because that’d be fun to listen to today as I undergo a massive apartment/cleaning project including a former tenant that got dumped on my face unexpectedly yesterday but is far too complicated to explain.

Anyhow, Grace and I made you a playlist of some of our favorite Broadway big group chorus numbers! You can listen to it while dancing around your room like the hooligan you are!

  1. I think I could possibly musicals music without the actual visual/story that goes with it. I’m excited to listen to this when I get home later! Thanks for putting this together Riese and Grace!

  2. OMG! I love this list but where is Dancing Through Life or One Short Day from Wicked? I have three itunes lists that are all broadway (each serves a different mood) and drive my roomies nuts because I play them non-stop. :)

  3. LOVE this! Hooked up the speaker to my laptop and blasted these songs in my dorm. Hope the neighbors don’t mind…

  4. yay yay yay showtunes!

I like listening to broadway albums on planes and picturing the shows in my head. way better way to spend the time than avoiding conversation with seatmates.

My favorite: 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I dressed up as characters from it two years in a row for Halloween.

  5. I adore this post and playlist, but I would not use “big group chorus number” to describe Ladies Who Lunch or 21 Guns (though 21 Guns afaik does include the entire chorus, but for hooligan dancing I’d probably go with the title number.)

My Broadway singalong playlist is at home, but here are a few off the top of my head: Giants in the Sky (Into the Woods), Heaven on Their Minds (Jesus Christ Superstar), 96000 (In The Heights), Miracle of Miracles (Fiddler on the Roof), Ballad of Czolgosz (Assassins), Another Day (Rent)

(Also “One” is from Chorus Line)

  6. I feel like I’ve been dreaming of this day since the first moment I visited Autostraddle.

  7. Yay, musicals!

    Mine are:

    Shadowland – The Lion King

Endless Night – The Lion King

    Good Morning Baltimore – Hairspray

Memory – Cats. I like singing it in French, because I’m like that.

    Hair – HAIR

    Electricity – Billy Elliot

The Stars Look Down – Billy Elliot

    Out Tonight – Rent

Home – Beauty and the Beast

    My Strongest Suit – Aida

Also, I’m going to see Bring it On: The Musical at the end of May with one of my best friends, so hopefully I’ll have a few more tunes to add to my playlist.

  8. ^^ Home from Beauty and the Beast is amaaazing.
    Also, I agree: more wicked!
    and Evita!

There was a two year period of my life in which every road trip to away games for soccer was accompanied with the RENT soundtrack on repeat

  9. This playlist made my Friday at work significantly better. (yes, I am just getting a chance to comment 2 days later.) Also as soon as I saw it I knew Grace had something to do with it.
