+ A new Slate series looks at non-normative parts of sexualities, including non-monogamy and poly-related terminology, kinky terminology and more.

+ Craftivist Casey Jenkins’ latest performance-art piece involves knitting with wool inside of her vagina.

+ The crowd-funded Minna Limon, a vibrator that buzzes harder when you squeeze it harder, is now available.

+ A new course at Elon University in North Carolina will teach students how to masturbate.

+ The New Yorker weighed in on the lesbian sex scenes in Blue is the Warmest Color with a discussion between Richard Brody, who liked the film’s use of sex, and Emily Nussbaum, who had more complicated thoughts.

+ Good Vibrations is hosting the Quickies Erotic Short Film Competition and has a series of interviews with the filmmakers leading up to the competition. One filmmaker, Sara Koppel, addresses the clit:

“My film “Little Vulvah and her clitoral awareness” is a short story about a girl who wakes up as from a dream, and then she sets out to explore nature, while discovering her clitoris.

This film is made with a great desire to create dialogue about women’s sexuality and taboo areas like women discovering their clitoris. And I’m hoping to get mothers and daughters to “dare” talk about this awareness and to encourage openness in the field.”

+ Fucking Trans Women, a zine about the sex lives of trans women, was released in October 2010 by Mira Bellwether, who Kennedy interviewed about creating a how-to guide for sex, having sex without it becoming a gender studies class and everyone’s different stories. Though it was originally released only as a .pdf, it has since been released in print.

+ People are having less sex, allegedly because of depression, the recession and technology:

“The third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) found that, on average, people aged 16-44 have sex just under five times a month, compared with figures of 6.2 for men and 6.3 for women in the previous survey, in 2000. […]

‘There’s a strong relationship between unemployment and low sexual function, according to the literature,’ [Professor Kaye Wellings, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine] said.

‘That is to do with low self-esteem, depression. At the other end of the scale iPads and computers have all breached the boundary between the home and the bedroom.'”

+ From Maggie Veness’ “The Invitation” in Best Lesbian Erotica 2013, edited by Kathleen Warnock:

“In my favorite fantasy I lock the door behind us, tenderly kiss your mouth and begin to slowly undress you. After undoing the tiny buttons on your blue satin blouse, I slip my palms beneath the fabric and slide it off your strong shoulders. I gently bite your neck, stroke the rippling curve of your ribs, draw out your dark nipples and suck four of your fingers into my mouth. Eventually, I drag your skirt and panties to the floor.”

    • How do you get an A in a course about masturbation? You Do You. But seriously, how do they know if you’re doing you correctly? :P

    • Sadly, it appears that this is not actually a course. Here’s a comment from the original article (http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=5251):

“This is not true. The university is not offering the course. Students at Elon create short seminars and share information with their peers in free, non-credit programs during Winter Term. There is no faculty or staff involvement in the Burst the Bubble programs. These are programs by students and for students. This not a class or course of the university. We did not receive your request for comment and would have been happy to provide you with the correct information. Dan Anderson, Vice President for University Communications.”

      • Burst the Bubble classes are great. Over the winter session students (individually or as an organization) can apply to teach fun, non credit-seeking courses. SPARKS, the student peer heath education organization, is running the aforementioned Break the Bubble Course. I just wish I was still a student to participate in it!

  1. Oh my goodness if that were a course the possibilities would be endless. Homework..extra credit…CONFERENCES. This needs to be a real thing.

  2. “Craftivist Casey Jenkins’ latest performance-art piece involves knitting with wool inside of her vagina.” Okay, you have my attention. (Btw, the video has SO many dislikes on YouTube)

  3. Years ago I tried knitting and failed miserably. I feel like Casey Jenkins’ method may be the solution to all of my problems.

  4. Those of us allergic to wool can simultaneously appreciate the “point” and cringe while wondering if hives are possible inside the vagina. omg omg I hope not.

I know what my bad dream will be tonight. vagina hives.

  5. I am all about vaginas, and I am all about knitting. But I am so not about vaginas and knitting. Even for the sake of performance art.

    • I felt bad, but I felt kind of sick watching the video when it zoomed in the blood stained parts of the knitting

  6. Speaking about sex toys, Groupon has had like 3 different ones in the past week at discounted prices and 5000+ have purchased. Guess they decided to take the crash course on masturbation.

  7. The knitting. That video made me really glad that I’m not a fibre and/or performance artist. I think it was the “menstruating on wool and then knitting with it” part that convinced me. I think I can live my entire life without having had that particular experience.

My girlfriend (who was grossed out by that video) is wishing that that performance artist had reached the same conclusion. (She said something about needing to go wash her eyeballs just before she ran out of the room).

Activities that lead to eyeball-washing are generally a no.

  8. Oh God, I laughed so hard. What? How is that…what? How does this show me that vaginas are not scary and intimidating? She’s making a tampon scarf. It’s not like her vagina is volunteering at the old folk’s home or anything.

You know, honestly, I might not be the intended audience.

  9. The fact that my alma mater is referenced in a NSFW Lesbosexy Sunday on Autostraddle [dot] com makes me so happy. I can’t even handle it. If this class had been offered while I was at Elon I would have taken it. So proud.
