New Webseries: Newtown Girls

Have you heard about The Newtown Girls? It’s an upcoming 8-part webseries about queer girls in Newtown. What and where is Newtown? DeAnne Smith once wrote a column about the lesbians there. You should read it, it’s funny.

The Newtown Girls is being funded through Kickstarter and the project needs your support! As a girl who has spent her adult life living in the Newtown area, I’d really love to see it succeed. Here’s a video message from the cast explaining the series and why you should get behind it.

The Newtown Girls’ Kickstarter campaign is currently $1,700 short of reaching its target. So if you wanna see this webseries happen, visit the Kickstarter page and give what you can. Donors who pledge amounts of $25 or more will receive neat thank you gifts like autographed cast photos, dinner with the actors, and more.

  1. No fucking way. Bahaha this will be awesome/hilarious to see us all documented like this. And finally a series where not all the lesbians are go-go dancers!

  2. Wow, those incentives are nice. Too bad a lot of us are on the other side of the world…

    Sidenote: they’re gorgeous. Me gusta.

  3. I’m so excited about this! I was actually born in Newtown, and now that I’m all grown up, I spend a lot of time there and go clubbing nearby pretty often. I hope this turns out to be something I can relate to.

  4. I’ve lived in Newtown for a year and this is a great place. I’d love to see this webseries happen !

  5. Hah! I live in Newtown (it’s awesome, queer girl capital of Sydney), it will be pretty cool to see what they come up with/how it compares to US/UK shows.

  6. I <3 Newtown. It is the only place I know where I can walk around in a dress and ballet flats, and girls will hit on me, like even if I am not in a gay bar they will hit on me. I might move there someday.

  7. hate to be a party pooper (or a deb – ha) but as someone who has lived in and around the area for years the cast pictured don’t really look like what I’d call ‘newtown lesbians’ apart from the asian/eurasian girl.
All my queer female friends, acquaintances and people I see on the street when I hang in Newtown are inked or pierced, have alternative (often short) hair and dress a lot more funky and a lot less like hipster straight girls.
Those girls look like the crowd that comes in from the ‘burbs or over from the eastern suburbs to pick up at the bank or zanzibar. No newtown lesbian I know would be caught dead in that white outfit!

Will be interesting to see how this pans out…

I do hope they succeed in making something worth watching though… and make longer episodes than the very similar ‘Generation L’ that was online earlier this year!

  8. ok, i’m quite certain that this makes me a cliche, but i’m ok with it. i love australian ladies. based on what i feel like must be some sort of innate quality that i have appreciated since childhood. i cannot explain it, though i’m certain the accents don’t hurt.

also, the cast is insanely gorgeous. i think i need to make a trip to this newtown you speak of.

also also, Crystal i’m pretty sure every article you’ve posted has introduced me to something new and amazing so i am looking forward to this.

  9. As someone who is out in Newtown ALL the time I’m curious as to what this series will be like. Epic LOL if it includes a scene at the tragic Sly Fox.
