About Me

About Me

A short, deaf, redheaded college student, often found reading, writing, or making bad puns. If space, ancient history, or gay things are involved, guaranteed I’m into it.

What I Like

Favorite Books

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood; Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire; the Parasitology trilogy by Mira Grant; Sabriel by Garth Nix; The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien; the Earthsea cycle by Ursula K. LeGuin. Also, there’s nowhere else for me to talk about webcomics and comic books, so. I’m also really into the webcomics Kill Six Billion Demons, The Last Halloween, and Agents of the Realm. As for comics, there’s the comic book series The Wicked + The DivineODY-C, Paper Girls, and I’m dipping my toe into DC (currently working on Red Hood and the Outlaws and a giant omnibus of George Perez’s run on Wonder Woman).

Favorite Queer Books

Timekeeper by Tara Sim; The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie; The Upside of Unrequited and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli; Huntress by Malinda Lo; The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth; Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova; The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I feel I should also mention that I own not one but two books of Sappho. (My favorite translation is Anne Carson’s If Not, Winter.)

Favorite Movies

But I’m A Cheerleader; Star Wars but particularly Rogue One; Pacific Rim; Mad Max: Fury Road; horror movies as a genre. (The last horror movie that I really liked was I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.) The queer version of Beaches that exists only in my head. Wonder Woman was a masterpiece that would only have been better if Diana had had a girlfriend.

Favorite Documentaries

Dawn of Humanity (about the all-women 2013 Rising Star expedition that discovered Homo naledi); Miss Representation; Bhutto; the Nova and Cosmos series.

Favorite TV Shows

Young Justice, Voltron: Legendary Defender; Sense8; Dear White People; One Day at a Time; Wynonna Earp; Grey’s Anatomy.

Favorite Music

Delta Rae; Sleigh Bells; Imagine Dragons; Neon Jungle; Hayley Kiyoko; Ruelle; Halsey; soundtrack as a genre. Right now I’m jamming on repeat to “Anything” by Hedley (I am about “uh uh, fuck that, I can do anything!”)

Favorite Sandwich

The amazing beautiful perfect ham and cheese on herbed rye from this deeply, horrifyingly Christian cafe/bookstore called the Lampstand in a tiny town in Nebraska. There were Jesus/Angry Birds mashup shirts. For real. Irony is a thing, apparently.

Favorite Quotes

“We also are daughters of the great, and have wills and courage of our own,” — Erendis, Unfinished Tales, J.R.R. Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien
“Not because of victories I sing; having none, but for the common sunshine, the breeze, the largess of the spring. Not for victory, but the day’s work done as well as I was able; not for a seat upon the dais but at the common table.” — “Te Deum,” Charles Reznikoff
“It is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world.” — “Invitation,” Mary Oliver
