pdx autostraddlers: 2 years agoWhat do y’all think of going to Last Thursday together this month?
-
Meet where and what time? I think that’s the week the Web Visions conference is going on, so not sure if I’d make it.
Speaking of art, though, if anyone ever wants to meet mid-day for an art museum break, I’m so in.
-
I like the idea of meeting for an art museum break!
-
I’m in any day I’m not besieged by meetings. Just say when. ”Riches of the City” ends 5/22.

Maybe!
-
I think definitely maybe. I just wish it weren’t so annoying to get home from!

The Great Library of Autostraddle: 2 years agoNon-fiction recommendations: Eating Animals by Johnathon Safran Foer
I’m nearly done with it, but it’s already changed my perspective on a lot of shit I either chose to ignore/thought I knew, even though I’m vegetarian.
And, The Purity Myth: How America’s Obsession with Virginity is Hurting Young Women by Jessica Valenti.
Everyone loves a…[Read more]-
Ooh, I’ve got ’The Purity Myth’ on my Paperback Swap wish list, so it’s good to see confirmation that it’s as good as it looks. Is she one of the same writers from ’Yes Means Yes’?
-
Oh yeah, Jessica Valenti wrote/helped write both of those.
They’re both really good, super accessible and not theory heavy.
If you ARE looking for more theory-heavy stuff, I’ve got a great list !-
Thanks, but I’ll skip the heavy theory! I have a master’s degree in Women’s Studies and heavy theory gives me PTSD flashbacks to grad school. Maybe in another decade or so I’ll be able to read it again!
But I do still like the more accessible work on the subject, so I’ve got Jessica Valenti on my list

Eating Animals ruined my life. I keep looking at my dog and wondering why I feel so bad about feeling the need to maybe someday eat him. And I think he knows. He keeps his distance now.
-
I know right? So uncomfortable. But I’m sure we’d feel the same way if we knew the chicken or cow that was going to be killed to eat. That detachment is what scared me the most, I think.

The Great Library of Autostraddle: 2 years agoHaven’t been reading too much lately, but I do have ”The Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P.Lovecraft” and ” Dark Tower: The Long Road Home” graphic novel sitting next to my bed. I need to get back into the swing of Lovecraft and King, it’s been so long since I did any serious reading.

Writers!!: 2 years agoWriting whilst the stack of movies I picked out play. Such a wide selection inspires me right now-
Sunshine Cleaning
Superman Returns
Batman
Batman Returns
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Push
Watchmen
Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist
Rent
Serenity
Spiderman
Whip It
Episodes of Community and Being Human-
I feel that that list is incomplete without Boondock Saints and Inglorious Basterds!
-
Boondock and Inglorius are for another script, they’re usually paired with Boardwalk Empire and The Road to Perdition.
-
-
I was just going to suggest Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and then it jumped out of the list and smacked me in the face, similarly to how it smacked me in the face the first time I watched it. Sososo good.
-
Love Scott Pilgrim! The books are even better imo.

Writers!!: 2 years agoIs this a reply? I’m still getting the hang of this.
Anywho, in response to Kestrel’s question, I’m bad at the whole technical grammer aspect of things and understanding all that (super right brained). I try to just make it flow correctly and make sure the pacing matches the story itself. However before I do anything, rewrites, edits, all…[Read more]

Writers!!: 2 years agoAnyone editing anything? I’m toiling over a hundred-page script of mine (and just volunteered to beta someone else’s fan fiction for the first time), and it’s kind of boggling, how hard it actually is to make honest surgical assessments and repairs of things. Any advice?
-
I was a creative writing undergrad and one of my tutors kept pushing a certain editing system on us. A revision for each point. They included:
1. Is the overall structure sound? – hook, inciting incident, increasing complexities, crisis, climax –
2. Is the resolution satisfying?
3. Overall time scale
4. Check format and length against target…[Read more]-
i’m editing a 100+ page novel. it’s a bitch. sometimes you just have to slog through it. i find that taking it in pieces and having a group that i can go to for constructive criticism is great (check your local libraries to see if there’s a writing group/guide/association, etc). also, i told my gram about it, so she’s demanding more. …[Read more]

I do a loooot of editing. Somehow I became everyone’s go-to person for that, which is weird because I consider my own grasp on grammar a little shaky. I abuse sentence fragments a lot, anyway.
Editing your own work and editing someone else’s are two different beasts entirely. When editing someone else’s, the best policy is to ask them what…[Read more]
