Hesta Prynn Turns It Gold: The Autostraddle Quickie Interview

Hesta Prynn is my homegirl and you need to totally add her to your posse and your playlist — if you haven’t already, seeing as Hesta was Autostraddle’s very first interview ever — originally part of the all girl party rap trio, “Northern State,” Hesta Prynn is flying solo these days while fine-tuning her hip hop/electro clash/hipster/fuckyoufortryingtocategorizeme sound.

Back in the day, I was a HUGE Northern State fan. “The Man’s Dolla” is still my fave, and Hesta Prynn is so sick on that track. “Before I was an MC I had another life,” Hesta raps like hot oil crackling in a pan. If Brooklyn hip hop knocked boots with PJ Harvey, Hesta Prynn would be their lovechild. Her rap flow is crisp, high pitched and slick with wit. Hesta Prynn’s singing voice feels ethereal, melodic and surprisingly haunting. She glides over dance funky synth beats and makes you feel like you’re sweaty and sexy in the club right along with her. (Oh, and did I mention how insanely hot she is? Yeah in case you didn’t notice, Hesta is fine as hell.)

Hesta Prynn is a fireball of frenetic sexified energy onstage. She has performed alongside the likes of Jay-Z, Tegan and Sara and 30 Seconds to Mars. Hesta Prynn stylistically killed it on her European tour and made it back home in time to walk the runway for Daryl K in NYC.

Lucky for us, she took the time to answer my questions for Autostraddle.

What are three of your best tracks? Or the ones you love the most?

My fave song from my EP is the title track “Can We Go Wrong” which you can download for free here:

I love my new single “Turn It Gold,” and also I really love the song “Recall” from the Can We Go Wrong EP, it’s kind of the sleeper hit of the record in my opinion. I’m probably going to make a video for that one next. I seem to make videos for my fave songs, there is a stop-motion video for “Can We Go Wrong” that I’m really proud of.

Describe your sound in five words, por favor.

Making love to your headphones.

You dream about collaborating with…..

The Dust Brothers, Timbaland, or Rihanna.

Music makes you … (fill in that blank however you like)

Seventeen forever.

You’ve made it to the big time: Grammys, scandals, press conferences, worldwide stadium tours…who plays you in the epic
biopic of your life?

Some unknown girl who’s hustling in New York right now trying to make it as an actress. I’d want to give someone their big break like J.Lo in Selena minus the sequins.

Gotta love a chick that makes a poignant Selena reference. Maybe that’s just me…

Either way, download Hesta Prynn into your life and keep checking for updates because this girl won’t stop, can’t stop uh uh uh. (Insert Diddy voice here.)

Well Hesta Prynn, welcome to your afterlife as a solo artist, part time model and Renaissance woman. Do your thing. We’ve got your back, right ladies?

  1. I love Hesta Prynn! I can’t wait until she comes somewhere close to her so I can see her in person.

  2. Wow, I’m a dork. I didn’t even see the big “download free MP3” button here, and instead tracked the song down on MediaFire.

  3. Awesome-est video eva! Saw Northern State when they opened for T&S in Winnipeg, they pretty much rocked the house.

    I <3 Sucka Mofo

  4. I fucking love my girl Hesta. I’ve been jamming to her for years. I also saw her attending a Tegan and Sara show in Toronto once. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I screamed.

  5. who doesn’t love a good all-girl rap group?

i’m a grown ass woman and i still one day hope to be a part of one.

  6. oh word?? yess! that’s what’s up. i mean one good groupie already makes you a star, right?

  7. Every time I see a band, I’m always tempted to completely leave my life, and join them by being their groupie. The only thing that stops me is the thought of being rejected by them.

With that said, I would totally be Hesta’s groupie given the chance.

  8. i saw northern state a few years back and they were awesome. nice to see hesta still rocking out.

  9. “Gotta love a chick that makes a poignant Selena reference. Maybe that’s just me…”

RIGHT?? If a girl can either A) make a poignant Selena reference or B) at least get my poignant Selena reference – well then she can just Bidi Bidi Bom Bom her way into my heart (or bed). Like woah.

      • you know how singers / bands have that ONE SONG that they’re like, “fuck…everyone loves this, but i’m sooo over it.” that was the song for Selena. But I still fucking love it.

PS. RIP Nate Dogg. MOUNT UP.

      • Ps. Aside from my A) Selena trivia nerdom & B) random non-Selena music shout out – I actually do love you too.

  10. I’m loving Hesta Prynn. After checking out that free mp3, I promptly downloaded the Can We Go Wrong EP and have been listening to it non-stop.
