I was lock-armed with Vikki et al back in the day (was lookout for her billboard exploits, coulda been the one to yell "EN!", took that photo at the Phyllis Schlafly demo, etc. etc.). And I can just say that at least from 1992 when we first met, 'til fall of 1996, when I left the Twin Cities, "angry" would be a vast oversimplification of our mood. Spirited, absolutely; righteous, sure. Also totally filled with delight and good humor. Hard not to pick up on that from Vikki's piece here, and the epic Lezboat. Characatures of radicalism may be tempting, but they are reductive, and attempt to make it easier to dismiss the complexity of the politics. Any chant of anything is by definition a microcosm. Most things I saw or heard from them kind of disdained gay assimilation (marriage, etc) and they always seemed so angry when I ran into them at marches and would take over with their own (sometimes mildly inappropriate for the situation) slogans (like queer chants at a take back the night march, which is supposed to be for everyone). They always totally reminded me of that scene in IBTC where the CIA hits up a gay marriage protest and says that we should abolish all marriage. Of course, I've never liked the "ten percent is not enough recruit recruit recruit" chant. Yeah, it's funny, but to the average idiotic passersby it's like a tiny microcosm of the 'gay agenda'. Just something to think about, and I think radicals are generally pretty cool and interesting, but it's not really my thing. Back when the world was young, and lesbians and anarchists were fiercer than they are now, it was such a thrill to be hanging out at a demo, waiting to march, and see the Avengers troop in wearing their capes. I still sing "God Is A Lesbian" to myself when I need to cheer up. Keep fighting the good fight, next generation! I was there in the early 1990s, and the Twin Cities Lesbian Avengers were amazing. Back when the world was young, and lesbians and anarchists were fiercer than they are now, it was such a thrill to be hanging out at a demo, waiting to march, and see the Avengers troop in wearing their capes.
