Transmen, Genderqueers & Studs: Hot Human Gallery!

You know how we love to do our girl galleries (recent galleries have included 100 Hot Curvy Girls & Girls Make Passes at Girls Who Wear Glasses), and this one was no exception. Except that it kinda was, because it made the word "girl" a bit problematic.

So welcome to our first hot & sexy PERSON gallery, featuring genderqueer & trans & stud & genderfuck persons/imagery — a celebration of the jaw-dropping beauty of those who choose to transcend traditional gender roles in some way to identify as trans or to present as something outside of the gender binary (see also: androgyny confounds!).

When dealing with extremely marginalized and/or self-identified groups and labels with variant definitions (e.g., genderqueer), it's almost impossible to avoid someone thinking we did something wrong when putting this together or used a term or "label" improperly. If you have that feeling, please do let us know... constructively and kindly. We put a lot of time into doing this right and our intentions are good ones, but we know we don't always achieve perfection.

HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to our BFF, trans photographer Amos Mac, who gave us some sweet prints specifically for this gallery.

Also we found many of these images via photographer Sophia Wallace, Molly Landreth, and websites like Genderfork, Fuck Yeah Trannies and Genderqueer at Tumblr Dot Com. If you see a photo here that you think came from your website or your camera, let us know so we can credit you if we haven't already. Some of these are from our respective hard drives, so who knows.

Also if this gallery has inspired you to want to look at some hot self-identified "butches," Mr. Sexsmith has that shit on lock. And maybe we'll do one of those one day too!

Thank you so much! I fucking love this Gallery. Probably has to do with the fact that a couple of photos are from my favorite photographer Amos Mac!! But Robin is definately my second favorite.

Serious question: Does anyone know what this “State of Katastrophe” biopic is all about? I can’t find any real information about it. Everything I find just says this:

Kayiatos is the subject of a forthcoming biopic called The State of Katastrophe.

    This is amazing, this gallery.

Three photos into the gallery and I was crying. CRYING. I am not entirely sure why, but I think it is because it is amazing and it moved me in the kind of way that made me cry. Especially the third photo, because my heart, it touched my heart.

haha, yeah last week someone was complaining on another post that we had too much masculine/androgyny in our fashion/style coverage and we weren’t properly repping femmes. we balance pretty well i think.

maybe we need a plug-in for “unrelated posts” at the bottom instead of “related posts.” actually… that would be kinda funny.

Ok i remember seeing this as a thread on AE and i have a question. Do you guys think that now a days femme girls are way more sought after than butch girls? Or do you think its an even split?

    Thumb up 0
    1. Laneia

i think people who want to find a trend, will.

      for every femme-loving queer, there’s probably a butch-loving queer. or an androgyny-loving queer. or a bear-loving queer.

mostly i just think it’s best to focus on yourself and how you can make that better. maybe not worry so much about who others are attracted to.

      but that’s just me.

        1. Emily

Yeah, they haven’t said it yet – but it’s something I’ve seen lots of places that should know better, and I really don’t want Autostraddle to do it too!

Your’re right, this isn’t an “all the hot people in the world gallery” – but it _is_ a gallery of hot genderfuckery and transness – and it’s super problematic that it completely omits half of that population.

          2. Meaghan

I feel like the gallery is very specific as to who it includes and your comments suggest that Autostraddle has willfully and maliciously decided to not include transwomen or folks along the transfeminine spectrum in this gallery, which is misfired conjecture at best. I’d be really careful with that. Your eagerness is cute, but it’s really misguided.

@emily i’m pretty sure you are the only one putting those words & that thought out there.

the title of this post is not “people who are transgender” and then full of only transmen. that would be something to complain about.

when the post says is titled, “Transmen, genderqueers, and-Studs” i’d kinda-really-only expect to see people who fall into those categories. right?

although i always expect boyshorts to appear in every autostraddle galleries. ALWAYS.

        Thumb up 0
        1. Brianna

Actually, since nobody has mentioned this yet, I’m pretty sure the original title said “transpeople.” Then it was narrowed down to transmen. Not like it matters.

          Thumb up 0
          1. Sarah

You’re right, the original headline said transpeople! Like we said in the intro, we aren’t 100% confident on the proper terminology, so we were hoping people would guide us in the right direction if we were wrong. I guess the ambiguity of “people” threw some readers off, so we changed it to “men” to make the masculine theme a bit more blatant.

Personally, I think transpeople is more appropriate? Because who knows if all of these people identify as men. But we’d rather change the term than misrepresent our intentions.

Actually, Riese tells me that she wanted to just say trans, but that’s really hard to make plural. Soooo, foiled by the English language, once again!

            Thumb up 0
            1. Collie

Thanks for clarifying this. The original title was what bothered me- it clearly said trans people, but that wasn’t reflected by the images.

      Hi Collie,

I think you’re super well-intentioned here, but you’re missing the mark.

You can’t assume all trans women identify as genderqueer, or even trans for that matter. Plenty of trans women identify as women, not trans. Since this gallery focuses on masculine-identified folks, it’d be really offensive to have a femme trans women in the gallery. She’d much better fit into the usual hot girls gallery.

However, any butch or stud trans women would fit right into this gallery. Gender is a complicated, layered intimate thing, and I think AS handled this one well.

Initially I was going to wholeheartedly agree with this because honestly I didn’t even bother reading the intro…i like me some pictures. It’s completely clear from the gallery what they were aiming for. And yeah it probably would be a bit frustrating to anyone feminine-identified to be found amongst these chappies. but the intro is actually pretty ambiguous. It’s talking about people who fuck with the gender binary to whatever extent…not just the masculine ones.

So basically I love the gallery the way it is…i think its really cool to see all the different personal takes on masculinity…and i would guess the people featured would be happy with the company too, since its not about being trans or whatever [that really doesn't matter] its just about masculinity.

eugh…so off track. what im saying is maybe change the intro paragraph.

        Thumb up 0
        1. turtle

ooookay, just read the actual gallery title, which is fairly clear that this time their theme is the spectrum of masculinity “Transmen, Genderqueers & Studs: Hot Human Gallery!” In which case maybe their opening paragraph was their way of avoiding a pronoun soup? …

but i notice still no black headless torso’s…for shame.

          Thumb up 0
          1. Sarah

Yeah, I think the intro is trying to avoid problematic pronouns. It’s worth remembering that some of the people pictured probs identify as gender neutral, or at least that’s a distinct possibility. Not knowing each person’s own gender identity can make it tough to accurately describe this gallery in specifics.

              [delete]
Yeah i’ve just erased my initial really long and aimless meandering flood of thoughts. Your point about gender neutral, had me sitting back a tad redfaced, hope my assumptions haven’t offended anyone.

“A picture speaks a thousand words” and ye had to try and explain 56 of them in 20 lines. Fair play, and I can’t wait to read/see what ye will have me pondering next. Seriously college doesn’t make me question anything half as much as AS.

Oh also, props to laneia/green, reread some of her interviews today…amazing.

              Thumb up 0
      3. Collie

Here’s my problem: originally, the title of this gallery referred to trans people, not specifically trans men. There was no reference to a theme of masculinity, only talk about genderfuck. This has since been changed, which is good, because it makes what AS is trying to do with this gallery a lot more apparent.

I decided to stop being a creepy creeper and actually sign up to tell you how fantastic of a job you all are doing. Not to stir the fiery pot of lesbian rage, but it really grinds my internet gears when I read a post saying that you’re not including this and that and their grandma. That you’re not being inclusive enough. I’ve maybe been a super fan of Autostraddle for only about five months, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that one of the reasons this website exists is to promote unity among our community. (You’re doing a lovely job btw!) This is still a relatively new website and it’s completely understandable that every body/sex/identity/fashion/nationality/ethnicity/thought/feeling in the whole entire universe isn’t posted for viewing pleasure. I have been loving autostraddle more and more (winning out over afterellen) but this takes the cake. You are officially made of WIN.

In the ever continuing process of me understanding my sexuality i’d been having a hard time relating to the desire for fem bodies adn what that means for me as queer. Admittedly wondering if I fit here or not and then BAM you answer my unasked questions via delicious eye-candy of the queer persusasion.

SO thank-you for (unintentionally) making little old me feel like there’s a place to just like what I like in this big crazy homosexy world/site.

And as far as “oh noes there are no transwomen etc” I just assumed that there would be a continuation in the future of this gallery but in the feminine leaning. Autostraddle has not dissapointed me yet, and i’m sure that this new demand will be met. (It’s true ’cause it rhymes!)

Keep up the awesome work autostraddle!

My only previous semi-disappointment (because this site is amazing) as far as visual representation went was the lack of more masculine presenting people and I love how now, especially in the light of all the complaints of the site “lacking in diversity” you guys are definitely stepping it up and showing us that all forms of gender presentation can co-exist. I think this is especially hi-lighted by the fact that not only did you post this wonderful batch of photos but that it was also posted on the same day that you posted a style article full of dresses/floral/heels/etc.

Cisgender privilege sucks, and unfortunately it’s blatant in the rubbernecking done throughout this post to ‘celebrate’ the “jaw-dropping beauty of those who choose to transcend traditional gender roles in some way to identify as trans or to present as something outside of the gender binary.”

Read some Julia Serano to understand why your fetishizing crossgender expression in the name of “celebrating diversity’ is effed up

Not all trans men are masculine and not all trans women are feminine. But here are female-assigned trans people all grouped together as if we’re all “fucking with gender” and “trans masculine”. I’m a gay nelly queer trans man and if you included me in your stud gallery, I’d laugh in your face, because I’m not masculine. Oh, wait, I get it, they all have vaginas… that’s why we’re all grouped together. (sarcasm)

    Thumb up 0
    1. riese

Well, all of these photos came from tumblrs dedicated to genderfuckers, genderqueers or transmen or from photography sets of transpeople (defined as such by the photographers), and sure some mislabeling happens, but it’s an innocent mistake, and really though, who cares?!

I’m a girl who likes girls and sometimes boys too and doesn’t really fit into any prescribed gender identities but if you found a photo of me in male drag and included me in your gay nelly queer trans man gallery, i would laugh, because it would be funny, because i am not those things, and also just FYI i don’t have a penis (just a strap-on!) but i wouldn’t laugh in your face, because that would be rude. people shouldn’t laugh in other people’s faces! i would just think it was cute that you thought i was cute and liked my photo. i probably wouldn’t even correct you. i’d just think, “oh, what a wonderful world” and then go make a sandwich with lady gaga

      Thumb up 0
      1. Kian

I don’t think you understood my point. I would laugh at the preposterous notion that trans men are inherently masculine, because a good portion are not masculine. Our maleness defines us, not our masculinity. And yet, I am assumed to be masculine by many in the queer community because I was assigned female at birth. This list only serves to reinforce this notion that masculinity plus female = trans. Its misleading, and I often get the feeling that lesbians only like trans men because of this erroneous assumption that we’re some variant of female masculinity. I mean, let’s face it, this list was put here to ogle and fantasize about masculine female-assigned trans people, was it not?

Communities respect other people in it, but I don’t feel respected at all by lists like this. In fact, I feel more oppressed by having to defend my position and educate you. When every negative comment is met with “it’s all in good fun”, one gets the feeling that it doesn’t matter what objections you hear. Ogle away, but expect to be criticized when your good intentions accidently erase people’s identities.

Let’s assume we’re all part of the same community.
Let’s assume we’re open to learning and growing.
Let’s also assume we mean no harm or ill will.

That said, I’m a big fan of snark and all, but it’s fairly useless in honest discussions where people are genuinely trying to understand and be understood. I don’t think anyone wants hand-holding or coddling, but a little benefit of the doubt can build bridges where they might otherwise be burned.

I really enjoy what you’ve said here.

I know its easy to point the finger and wiggle away but there’s also something in constructive criticism that is much more..well constructive.
