I have to agree that an out queer woman in his position probably would not have benefited in the same ways that he did.

I’ve been out at all my workplaces over the last few years and have consistently been the only out person, but thankfully never encountered any overt discrimination. A couple months ago I moved to a new, more queer-friendly city and started a new job where I am one of several out people, including one of my direct supervisors. Once she found out that I was also queer, I noticed a change in her attitude towards me… not any sort of favoritism, but a kind of camaraderie, I guess? It feels like a taste of what white, straight, middle-class men must experience when they enter a workplace and it’s kind of fascinating. I think if I were confident of that sort of reception I’d probably have gotten a lot further in life job-wise.

Didn’t Rachel Maddow say something about something sort of a little like this existing for women in general, not just queer women. Like, women in journalism helping each out professionally and feeling obligated to do the same? Possibly in Miss Representation? Or maybe I’m making that up.
