News like this makes me really proud that I’m finally completely out, even though it took me forever. It’s so true that having a face to put to an issue-especially someone you know personally makes a difference in a person’s opinion. Such a simple way to make a difference, if you’re in a position to do so.

I live in a very conservative place and work in a small company where everyone votes Republican but coming out was the best decision I could have ever made. When my girlfriend proposed a few months ago everyone at work was genuinely excited for us and Christmas parties are so much better when you are out and can get drunk with your partner. I really do feel the most important thing for us in the gay community is to come out, be comfortable with ourselves, and just do our best to be kind and loving (even tho that shit ain’t easy with everything we are faced). Your closing line is definitely true – to know a gay is to love one.

For the first time at my conservative Christian university, we have 3 designated safe zones that were all offered by the Gen X professors and staff. And these teachers and staff members? So open to just talk and share what they believe love is and are just there to be supporters, regardless of what our church deems “right” There is hope!
