Wear This Stuff and Tell The World You’re a Tomboy

Sometimes I wish I could wear a big sign around my neck that tells people exactly where I’m at in this world. Having the words “Working-Class Queer Latina / Baddest Bitch” brandished across my chest would just probably make going about my day a little easier sometimes, is all. Luckily, a bunch of people within this universe either share this desire or have gotten wind of it and have begun producing clothes that will help me and all my fellow tomboys spell (some of) who they are out for everyone.

Buy this sh*t and tell the world your truths, god damn it.

Tomboy Femme Tee-Shirt by Autostraddle

I make sure to wear this shirt once a week at the least, just so everyone knows who I am. Also, it’s the most comfortable thing I’ve ever had the pleasure of draping over my body. True story.

  1. I wish the Tomboy Femme came in the underwear set (like Badcock) :(.

I don’t wear clothes with words on them.

  2. I really want Autostraddle’s Tomboy Femme shirt to come in a V-neck – and also a tank. That is all. Xo

  3. I’m actually not sure how I feel about this marketing strategy. I’ll support Autostraddle sure, especially since the shirts have a queer spin on it (tomboy femme is def a queer lady thing) but Forever 21? They’re capitalizing on women self-identifying as tomboy because androgyny is totes a thing these days and tomboy is considered “edgy” and synonymous with sexually laid-back cool girl that you (cis-het guy) totally want as your girlfriend because your guy friends will love her… and is maybe a bit queer so will maybe someday be open to a three-way. Maybe I’m wrong to assume a sexual connotation to all things written on women’s clothing in mainstream retailers, but I’ve yet to be proven wrong.

As to the other brands: if you’re serious about expressing yourself as tomboy, I’m pretty sure you don’t need to buy $48 Wildfang t-shirts saying “Tomboy” on them in order for people to get the picture.

But yep that Autostraddle shirt is awesome and works well for flagging purposes, and for supporting this website we know and love.

    • I don’t think there is necessarily a sexual connotation to tomboy with the Forever21 advertising. I think that is reading too much into it, but long before I ever came out, back when I was 9, tomboy *was* a way of saying I was more into “boy” things and generally a guys girl. It let the guys know I’d rather be playing with them and watching the WWF. That’s nothing new.

I don’t know where you get the sexually laid back part from.

I’m a bit over the shopping/wallet shaming. If someone wants to pay $48 dollars for a shirt, that’s really none of your damn business. I feel like people, mostly women, are criticized about shopping cause it’s frivolous, but it’s money spent on something you wear everyday. There are far more expensive wasteful things out there.

  4. This list is missing the absolute best thing about Tomboyx which is their boxer briefs made specifically for women! Most comfortable underwear I have ever worn…

  5. this article (and the fact that my bank account isn’t dismal) to buy the tomboy femme tee finally so there’s that
