33 Ways to Eat Avocados Every Which Way

Hello and welcome to this new thing we’re trying out where we help you figure out what you’re gonna put in your mouth this week. Some of these are recipes we’ve tried, some of these are recipes we’re looking forward to trying, all of them are fucking delicious. Tell us what you want to put in your piehole or suggest your own recipes, and next week we’ll check in and talk about which things we made, which things we loved, and which things have changed us irreversibly as people. Last week, we ate greens

Let’s have a chat about the best food in the entire world: avocados. I can’t even tell you how many avocados I’ve eaten in my lifetime. Five bazillion? Close enough. My mother is a hippie from Southern California, and instead of getting candy or junk food as a kid, I’d get sliced avocado as a snack. You better believe this turned me into an avocado fiend. I average about two or three avocados a week (I’d eat one every day if I thought it was healthy for a person to consume that much creamy green deliciousness). Dare I say avocados are the perfect food? First, they’re cheap (my grocery store lists them at 10/$10 or 5/$4 like every other week). They mix into other recipes, they’re delicious in desserts and they add the perfect amount of richness to any bite.

It seems that my love of avocados is a shared love here at Autostraddle. Turns out we’ve posted a million recipes featuring avocado, have featured them in Ode to My Pantry and hoard many others from the corners of the world wide web. Here are some of our favorite avocado recipes, but you won’t see any guacamole here. Come on, that’s predictable. Branch out!

1. Avocado Pie

2. Chocolate Avocado Pudding

3. Daydream Poke

4. Ovo-Cados

Hansen: This is one of my favorite recipes ever. It combines the two loves of my life: runny yolks and avocados. I love Marika’s version of it from Eggs In Exciting Holes, maybe the best title for a post we’ve ever come up with here at Autostraddle. The avocado is smooth and adds a bit of needed tang to the rich, creamy yolk. Oh yum.

Hansen: I had tried making these before with a baked-version recipe and they were so sub-par, I had almost given up on the idea all together. But here’s the trick: don’t bake them. These are FRIES. If you want avocado coated in panko that gets a little soggy and not crispy, go ahead and bake them, but if you want something so delicious you swear you’ll never eat anything for the rest of your life, throw caution to the wind and toss some oil in the skillet (but also please be careful, I don’t need you getting burned).

24. Avocado Mac and Cheese

25. Spinach, Mushroom and Avocado Quesadillas

26. Avocado, Cream Cheese and Salsa Pockets

Rachel: HAHA WAIT WHAT ARE YOU SERIOUS? I’m mad that there was anyone on earth who knew that these existed and didn’t tell me about them before now. WHAT IF YOU ALSO PUT BLACK BEANS IN THEM. WHAT THEN.

27. Bacon Wrapped Avocado Fries

28. Chilled Avocado Soup

29. BLT Stuffed Avocado

30. Grilled Salmon with Avocado Salsa

31. Avocado and Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad Sandwich

32. Carnitas Avocado Pizza

  1. Did you post this article entirely in response to Brittany’s Five Foods You Should Never Eat piece? If so, then great job! If not, consider lying because then you get a ‘great job’!

  2. I’m really excited about this list. There’s a latino market down the road from me (I really think that they have the largest and ripest avocados I’ve seen since moving to Missouri), and I may just have to buy all their avocados and eat nothing but this list for the next month.

  3. this has been very soothing after Brittani and her associates’ avocado persecution session. lol that these were posted side by side.

  4. You know that feeling when you say something over and over again and it stops sounding like a word, just a collection of syllables?
    Ahh-voh-kah-doe.
    Weird.

  5. *Prints this article*

I had a deep fried avocado stuffed with chicken and cheese when I went to Austin and to this day, when asked about the city, that’s pretty much all I talk about. I could almost feel my arteries clogging up at the time but I regret nothing.

  6. This post didn’t include guacamole, but I make a killer pomegranate guacamole. Super festive at Christmas!

      • You can adjust ratios to your liking and depending how much you want to make but I use: avocado, pomegranate, green onion, cilantro, lime juice, and crushed red pepper flakes (you could use jalepeno instead if you wanted).

  7. No. 4 is happening tomorrow. 8 the day after. 19 for next week, but 20 for later this week. 21 has to happen next week when I get a whole chicken done! I’ve eaten 25 already this week. 27 might be overkill, but I have the resources. 30 IS SOOOOOOO HAPPENING OMG! And I’ll save 33 for late summer, seeing as brussels are out of season…

Anywho, my new found love of Avocado’s is unending, but I’ll share just a couple of my favourite ways to eat them:

Prawn-Avocado salad. Really simple, just split an Avocado in halves, and fill the pit with prawns and seasoning. Instant gratification!

My current favourite – and what I’ll be waking up to tomorrow – is like the BLT, but with bacon, brie and avocado. It needs nothing else.

  8. Not only do we not have marriage equality in Australia, our avocados are ridiculously expensive (currently at $3 AUD each!)… Get your shit together Australia!

  9. I had no idea avocados were so polarizing! this has been very enlightening. i just assumed everyone loves avocados because i could eat them on, in, and around everything forever and ever amen. unfortunately, in all honesty, i am not sure how many of these recipes i will actually be able to make bc it seems every time i buy avocados, i just eat them all with a sprinkle of maldon flaked sea salt(the best salt) and a spoon.

  10. MMMMMMM. My mom did not even slice it just cut it half and handed me a spoon. Sandwich favorites:
    1. peanut butter and avocado (don’t think just make)
    2. cucumber*, avocado, and bacon on toast (*you need a little fresh with that delicious fat)

  11. sorry but avocado fries sounds just terrible. fries covered with smashed avocado, sure, but to fry it?

I don’t understand you people, what did avocados ever do to you?

  12. I love love love this article. My favorite avocada dish was sort of a compbo of #1 and # 2, a chocolate avocado pie which I ate at a potluck years ago and went to great lengths to track down the person who made it to get the recipe.

As a vegetarian I ate alot of avocados, but when I recently quit dairy I started to eat avocados daily. Since I am sometimes too busy to cook I usually add them to a spinach carrot sprout sandwich or salad but I WILL try these amazing sounding recipes.
    THANK YOU!

  13. Buy some Pepper Lantern Salt (really spicy, fucking amazing!) from the Embarcadero farmer’s market in San Francisco, and put a teaspoon or two on an avocado half.
